So where is Brighton? I always thought it was in one of the Sussexs, how come we sing GOSBTS then?

Good read, amazing stat, only 8 defeats in total shared between Brighton and Crawley.

But as a player, he was whiny, a niggly fouler, an imaginary card waver and a diver. A very unsportsmanlike player.

Great article but I cannot agree with your view of Poyet as a player.

Poyet was a winner!!

Isnt it funny how people always find things wrong with winners.

We don't sing it in an administrative sense, only an historically geographical one.

Well at least I do.

Everywhere I have looked, puts Brighton in East Sussex. Even the unitary city of Brighton and hove is in the historic county of Sussex, the ceremonial county of (East) Sussex, and the administrative county of East Sussex, never that i can find is it mentioned as not being in Sussex.

But Brighton isn't mentioned in the song... and neither is "East".

.. and I didn't say it wasn't in Sussex.

We can still win the cup for Sussex whilst remaining in the Unitary Authority of Brighton and Hove. There was talk of updating the lyrics, but unfortunately they don't scan very well.

Ceremonially, Brighton is in East Sussex.

Administratively, it's its own authority.

Head along the coast, and you'll see a sign for 'East Sussex' in Saltdean. Likewise, you'll see a sign for 'East Sussex' as you reach Falmer.

I thought Falmer was in Lewes ?

good blog.

I am mystified as to why people don't like Gus though. I can't stand Chelsea. Never liked them. But weirdly, always liked a lot of their players from that period just before the Russian showed up; Vialli, Zola, Di Matteo and Gus. Not just because they were great players but they all seemed like genuine, nice, intelligent guys. And I know it's not just me, plenty of people have a lot of time for Poyet.

It's just the way he conducted himself as a player. Sorry. If I wanted to cause a row here, I would suggest that his attitude was reflected in the way your team played at St. Mary's this season, but I don't, so I won't. ;-)

I liked Zola, Vialli etc. too!

Anyway, if I havent' achieved anything else, at least I have caused a minor debate about administrative county boundaries!

Yes it is

He speaks the truth, either that or Manchester is not in the county of Greater Manchester and Chichester is not in West Sussex. Physically Brighton is in East Sussex whereas it is not part of East or West Sussex for administration purposes.

Well I am mystified as to why you think he conducted himself like this, he does not have that reputation in football.

We were in the Premier League when he was a player remember this is born out of first hand experience. I think he does have that reputation with a lot of his opposition fans from that era!

In my experience Gus Poyet has always been a popular figure in football. Brighton or no Brighton connection.

This!

gwc, opinions can divide football. In this instance they do.

My personal experience, first hand, is that a number of your team are whingy, niggly, divers, bad losers & overall dirty and unsporting.
