Chris never set us up like that. Not against a direct rival at home and certainly not at this stage of the season.

Chris got sacked for a much less defensive mindset than this.

Not trying to reopen old conversations as it's been done to death. Just sometimes though I feel the need to jump in to safeguard the reputation of a good manager and a fine man

Totally agree regards a ‘good manger and fine man’ but no way is Potter more defensively minded. The attempts on goal alone prove that be incorrect.

Trouble is, one bad season is all it takes. I’m slightly mystified by all this talk of project building, slowly, gently, small increments at a time etc that many fans think we’ve got the luxury of time for! Football is utterly ruthless and especially at this level I.e. if GP is afforded such time, luck and good fortune, not just from Tony but the footballing gods, then it’ll be a 1st! The average life expectancy of a football manager is something akin to a Sopworth camel pilots on the western front. So many variables contribute. Managing success is as tough as managing shite. It’s constant disruption. Ripping up plans. Good players (and managers) get nicked. Bad managers get sacked. And Bad players get more cars. It’s a crazy crazy business to be in, which is why I prefer the sound the charge bugler approach - who gets time for Chess moves?!

You’d prefer us to be a club like Palace and only look short term? What has that achieved for them? They’re in their 8th season (and 7th manager) at the top level - 4 more seasons than us - and have not progressed at all since their relatively successful 11th place in their first season. I’ll stick with the long term progress thanks.

Just to remind you that what we saw yesterday is the Palace side you want us to emulatwe. All solid banks of defenders and hope to get a chance on the break.

They might be able to get points at Old Trafford that way but is that really what you want Brighton to look like week-in week-out?

No, it really isn’t. Palace are truly awful. Imagine paying money to watch your team play at home and have one shot. Brighton are a great team and we are planning for the future, whilst also bringing in quality like Lullana and Welbeck. This thread title is so wide of the mark it is hilarious.

Spurs and Wolves away.................

I'm not trying to sully his reputation, he was brilliant for us - but the last 6 months or so of his tenure were desperate.

Don't like Palace as much as the next man but thats rose tinted.

10th place , 11th , a 12th , never really been in danger of going down. An FA quarter final and an FA cup final.

plus been ahead of their main rival every year.

I'd have that if offered all day long

Mystified ? Bloom took over Brighton in May 2009. So far the project has been 11 long years. He can be pretty ruthless when needed - see Hughton - but he's not going to be distracted from his goal of a top half, sustainable profitable team for the sake of a few defeats or a bad run. We've all seen plenty of them and learn to move on i guess. Along the way he's seen club promoted twice, narrowly avoided relegation, sacked a few managers but gradually built up an academy and loan factory producing multi million ££ youth players every year, an amazing stadium that (normally !!) sells out every week, has two of the best football administrators in the country, one of the best young managers in the game and is on his 4th year in the Premier League. Not sure as one of the last fans left owning an EPL club he needs many lessons in strategy or chess moves or frankly people telling him what a relegation fodder team looks like even after a 4-2 defeat to a team paid for by billionaire oligarchs.

Exactly, I fear there's a bit too much smugness going on here. Palace have been far better than us for years now and Roy has done far better than whoever we've had in charge. Let's not forget that they've also won at Old Trafford this season and have beaten City recently. Let's hope this is the season we can finally get above them but that's far from nailed on.

Great post.............the level of misunderstanding, lack of patience (or is it a creeping sense of entitlement ?) is bizarre sometimes. The Academy was 'a waste of money' a couple of seasons after opening because it 'hadn't produced anything'. We now have people bleating about not hitting Tony's 'top ten' target..............all from people who think they know more about running a football club than one of the best set-ups in the game. Gives us something to debate I guess

Palace's greatest strength is also their greatest weakness. Well-organised defence and decent on the break so are capable of nicking an away result almost anywhere, but what attacking player wants to join a club who plays like that?

Selhurst is becoming a graveyard for strikers. Benteke, Sorloth, Batshuayi - all international strikers but in the last 4 seasons 103 matches, 11 goals.

Yep. They're an established EPL team but lets not get too carried away. All credit to them for that City victory but it was nearly 2 years ago. (Dec 18) - but their normal record v top 6/top 10 clubs is as patchy as ours. One win last season v (Man Utd, Arsenal, Man City, Spurs, Liverpool, Chelsea, Everton, Wolves).

Any progression in 7 years though? Didn’t look like it yesterday. Their success is all down to Zaha, who has been outstanding for them. Once he leaves they’re in trouble.

In order to progress beyond the point they've reached they'll need to somehow finish above the Top 6 plus Leicester, Everton and Wolves, and that involves spending a shedload of cash - as Villa are finding out.

Palace don't have a shedload of cash, they don't have a fancy stadium either. They have got to midtable by playing a very organised, functional counter-attacking style that is not easy on the eye and will not be winning them many fans outside of SE25, and that itself has to be a source of worry for their owners.

I applaud them for the consistency they've achieved but they are over-reliant on Zaha and penalties, and scored 20 fewer goals last season than the one before. It is incredibly frustrating to be outplaying them but not getting the results but we have to play the long game - Zaha and Hodgson cannot go on forever.

Just dreadful.

What if we dropped the entire ‘Everton 11’ to appease your anger?

In their place, we could play:

———————-Sanchez———————-
Veltman—-Burn——-Roberts—-Bernardo
————Pröpper——-Molumby————-
—Jahanbakhsh—Lallana——Izquierdo—-
———————-Welbeck———————-

There’s 76 English Caps, 39 Dutch Caps, 44 Iranian Caps and 2 Irish Caps in there to settle your nerves along with a return to a back 4.

And in that time we’ve had 6 managers. But I’m not criticising TB, you seem to have gone off on one on your own there. Football management is a short term occupation. If you’re arguing it’s not, I beg to differ.

Bloom's give his managers a fair crack. He's been here 11 years and has only sacked three managers, and of those, one was not his choice and one was sacked for disciplinary reasons - so in all that time, he's only dismissed one managers for his results.

This is a very stable club - and I think that will stand it in good stead

The post I was replying to was comparing Hughton's to Palace's yesterday. Nothing to do with Potter

Yep it's unbelievable.

We will paste teams this season like we did with newcastle. Everton are looking very very clinical, they have a world class manager, and have actually signed a world class player this season.

Logging off from this incredibly toxic place for the evening.

You have to agree, Newcastle were shocking

Newcastle at home? Where the players seemed to be under orders not to cross the half way line?

What, end of 2018/19, when we had 50% possession, 9 chances, with Murray inexplicably missing a bread and butter header to win it from 4 yards out?

What makes you say Palace only look at the short term? 8 consecutive seasons in the PL for a club of their stature is success. You’d do well not to be so dismissive of such an achievement. It’s equal to our cumulative achievement in 119 years. Anyway, the long term has never existed in football. Good luck chasing that unicorn. It’s constant change, results driven, where even success can be rewarded with the sack and the average manager lasts some thing like 2 seasons. Run of poor results and you’re sacked. Run of great results and you’re poached. Each time, the incoming talks about building for the long term, but its incredibly rare they’re around long enough to execute. That’s football. Change is the only constant. Fast and furious.
