Heavy gunfire and explosions have engulfed the school in North Ossetia, where hundreds of children and adults are being held hostage.
A large number of people have been seen fleeing the premises, many of them covered in blood.

The hostage takers apparently tried to escape the school building together with some of the hostages as soldiers fired on them.

Helicopters hovered overhead and there were troops everywhere.

Parts of the school are reported to have been blown up, the BBC's Sarah Rainsford reported, and a section of the roof appears to have collapsed.

People could be seen running from the building - some of them semi-naked - as a thick pall of black smoke hovered overhead.

There is pandemonium in the streets surrounding the school, says the BBC's Damian Grammaticas, who is also at the scene.

The armed group which is holding the hostages were earlier reported to have demanded independence for neighbouring Chechnya.

On Thursday, 26 women and young children were released, and some of them provided the first details of conditions inside the school.

"You know there are not 300 people in there, but altogether 1,500. People are lying on top of each other," 27-year-old teacher Zalina Dzandarova told the Kommersant newspaper

They must have a different attitude to the lives of their citizens in Russia.

There looks to be only one answer to this continuing issue, but the president does not want to hear it.

What answer's that - give in and grant independance to Chechnya? If they did that there would be another province with the same demands on Monday.

Should we have just given over N Ireland to the IRA when they bombed London?

No country should ever give in to terrorism, whatever the cost - as that price will escalate when all the other parties put forward their own demands.

Britains record in NI wasn't great, but it I didn't 'get over it' after Warrington or other such terrorist acts. I will not just 'get over it' this time. WHATEVER has happened, the taking of innocent lives (i.e. children who have not been able to influence the situation etc) is not something to 'get over'. It is something to be hated, despised for the obvious cowardice of these people.

The victims and the parents of the children killed are in my thoughts...

Redland, that just goes to show that one persons terrorist is another's freedom fighter. Whatever the political background no country should ever submit to the demands of those who commit murder for the sake of their beliefs. This can only lead to greater atrocities in the future as other groups present their own demands.

PAYBACK !! , who are they paying back ? I know, the children who ran through there cities wielding weapons. Or maybe the toddlers who made the plans for removal of complete independance....

Redland, think about it, there is NO situation where this is in ANYWAY excusable...

All they want is Russia to stop killing there people and invading their country, its not an unreasonable request is it :jester:
