Temporary ceasefire announced in the cities of Mariupol and Volnovakha, to enable civilians to leave. A rare display of empathy from the Russians, or simply a move so they can say “it’s not our fault people died” when they resume hostilities and obliterate the entire area.

Sadly, I know where I’d put my money.

It’s so they can say those left are obviously the nazi militants and fair game to bomb them. What I can’t understand they are supposedly protecting the Russian speaking residents of the area. Yes some have fled back to Russia but many remain. They appear not to have any concern for them now, especially as they bombed their nuclear power station.

You cannot tell me that this is accidental. The strategic shelling of civilian homes is a deliberate strategy to demoralise, and surely a war crime.

According to the BBC, they're not observing it anyway - and still shelling the city.

I wrote something similar a few days ago.

I'm certainly not playing down the utterly horrific loss of life, but I guess in this modern world we may have become a bit desensitised to "X people have died" reports in the news. Particularly after the last two years, it's just become so common to hear such things - it's been a daily occurence.

The utter devastation of large swathes of towns and cities is just so visual - large areas all but destroyed with just rubble and mangled mess left behind.

Even if the senseless bombing stopped right now, and it clearly won't, so many have lost so much. The country is going to be utterly stuffed for a generation or more. And for what?

Evacuation of Mariupol has been postponed

The evacuation of civilians from Mariupol has been postponed, according to the Mariupol city council. It says the Russian side has not been observing the temporary ceasefire in place.

No surprise there, I said to my wife when I heard about the ceasefire that I expected to hear it hadn’t been observed properly by the Russians. They seem to like going on the slaughter of civilians and kids

My Ukrainian neighbour has been worried sick all week as her parents left Kyiv a week ago and have been travelling across Ukraine to the Czech Republic.

Just spoken to her and they have arrived safely in Prague

Footage on the Guardian YouTube channel of what appears to be a Russian helicopter being shot down by Ukrainian forces.

those poor bloody people.

think about this and imagine it was the uk being bombed and shelled. Everything you (I) have worked our entire lives destroyed. Your insurance says tough it’s not covered. You have to run. You will have limited cash that you can take. Any thoughts of comfort and security all gone… nothing to fall back on …. not a jot left. A scenario maybe coming to a town near you soon….

If “we” get out of this without nuclear war, Putin is going to be the most hunted man on Earth. Nobody will protect him. I hope when he is captured, and he will be. Nobody is that powerful for very long. That he is literally air dropped into Ukraine to face the anger of those he has tormented.

History is not kind to those that play God.
