I think you need to stick to pizza menus and pot. Nobody wants this war except Putin and (for now) his inner circle.

Of course somebody will make money from it. But you really have not got the temperature of the world on this one. War in Europe is a universally opposed action.

If you trust the media yes... I dont.

The world’s main hope here is the Russian people. They have the power to unite and get rid of him. It won’t be easy for them but I get the impression from various news reports and interviews that they know what’s going on and there are enough of them to fill the streets and demand Putin stops his impersonation of Hitler.

Putin will just use his gestapo-esque secret service to make the people disappear. Leaders imprisoned for life in remote locations for ‘treason’ as China’s done in Hong Kong, raped, tortured, murdered.

Of course if Russia is invaded it starts throwing the nukes around, which is why nobody is invading Russia nor are they going to do so.

He wouldn’t be the first despot to announce the world will burn if they die. Both Saddam and Gadaffi said similar. When push comes to shove the people who follow them tend to want to limit the mess they have to clean up.

Neither had Nukes though, or had won (or lost in fairness) a world war though A1X. But get your point, and there is some truth in what you say (eg Paris 1944, 1982 Warsaw Pact Commander who waited crucially to see if Nato really was attacking or it was a computer mistake) as sure you know because you’ve great knowledge of history. Best hope is Putin is disposed of within, but Dictators always create a court of lies. Everyone is in on it, acclaiming the great leader so that no one really knows who they can trust without being killed. So everyone toes the line, to such a degree that merely forgetting to hail the great leaders framed painting each time walk past the thousands of in a city is enough to risk the lives of your entire family by association. It’s a Mad world. And it’s just got even more dangerously madder.

President Biden has reiterated that US forces "are not, and will not" be engaged in the conflict with Russia in Ukraine.

"Our forces are not going to Europe to fight in Ukraine, but to defend our Nato allies and reassure those allies in the east," he says. "The United States will defend every inch of Nato territory with the full force of American power."

@HWT, may I have your opinion on something?

I came across this on my travels:

https://eu.usatoday.com/story/news/...n-aspergers-syndrome-study-pentagon/22855927/

A Pentagon study dating back to 2008 suggests that Putin may have Asperger's. What do you make of it?

Got my son round for dinner in 5. I'll deffo take a look at it later.

I'm my experience people on the specrum don't make great leaders, because we never make it to leadership. We freak out too many people, and too mny people freak us out.

Back later

Why would China self destruct by waving goodbye to the immensely wealthy consumer markets of the US, Canada, UK, Norway, Switzerland, EU, Israel, huge Central/South American allies of the US, Australia, Japan, South Korea and assorted other allies of the west around the globe?

Russia, Belarus, Syria and Turkey is a small market to sell electronics and cheapskate plastic toys to.

In no way would China want the economic schism you talk of and be on the pariah/poor side of the fence.

China most likely has greater ambitions than to produce luxuary for westerners. Jintao (according to Yuan Hingbin) in 2008:

We must take a further step in opening up to the outside. We must use economic, cultural, and social means to expand and strengthen our influence on other countries worldwide. Historically, the west used battle ships and opium to colonize China. Now, the roles are reversed. We will seize the opportunity that capitalism’s economic crisis has presented us with. Through the Opening- Up Policy, we will gradually make them Socialist China’s economic and cultural colonies. In the past, when they colonized us, we were invaded by imperialism. But now, when we colonize them, communism will prevail over the rotting capitalist world. Together the CCP must conquer capitalism through socialism. Ultimately, we must fulfil our mighty mission to free all of mankind through communism. In the coming future, this mission will be the core of the CCP political strategy.

China is 95%+ self-sufficient in food production which is really not the case in for example the UK. A Sino-Russian empire could easily get self-sustaining in most areas. Its very old fashioned to believe that the things we buy from China is somehow something that keeps their country floating... at one point that was true, today they would be fine without us - but are gladly watching us get increasingly dependent on their industry and investments.

I don't see them getting involved at any point soon but I definitely think they are both happy and very aware of the situation right now and the plans onwards.

Watching a young girl grab her bucket and spade as she left with her parents from her coastal home. It struck a chord.

The simple fact is that 'the West' has the power of sanctions that would immediately stop Putin's advances.

Whether it is in the interest of the majority of people in power in 'the West' to make this happen remains to be seen. I'm not holding my breath personally :(

But to fund anything, they need the vast balance of payments surplus from selling to the west and all its allies.

They’re a capitalist state, albeit with one political party.

Money oils every part of the Chinese system, as well as their ongoing actions to lend to Afghanistan, African nations, to create a load of nations dependent on them.

None of that affected my vote. I have been against EU membership for 40 years. Do you really want to discuss this on here whilst people are dying in the Ukraine ?

You want the way Europe was 40 years ago? Well congratulations, now you've got it.

BBC Russia experts and academics tonight on R5 all said the effect of sanctions would not be immediate, but if unified would have a huge adverse effect on Russia within months.

Watching NDTV (Indian news channel) and the ambassador to Delhi has just said there’s no Russian troops in Ukraine. I mean…

apparently has >600bn reserves in assets, a fairly self sufficient country for basics. most sanctions wont hit in time frame required. does seem to be a hesitancy to block Swift which would close down day to day finance in the country.
