Well if you're going to split hairs....

I should have said "before America"
But how close exactly do you think they were to getting a man on the moon - and if they were close, why did they not continue?

Russian general 'sacked after only 16 days in the job'
Ukraine's military intelligence unit is claiming the general in charge of Russia's Western Group of the armed forces has been sacked, after only 16 days into the job.

Sounds like Chelsea or Watford's policy on the guy in charge.

While I agree with your general point, it's fair to say I'm not feeling much sympathy for ordinary Russians, given what's happened to ordinary Ukrainians.

I think there’s room to feel sympathy for both. I feel sorry for anyone living under Putin’s regime.

So you feel sorry for the Russian soldiers who are committing war crimes, on the basis that they too live under his regime? I assume not, but perhaps you do feel sorry for the Russians who aren't committing crimes, but are supportive of his war?

There are all sorts of people across the world who are badly let down by their leaders (yes, even worse than we've been let down). Many deserve our sympathy. Russians have to be pretty low down that list.

Did you think all Germans were Nazi’s because they didn’t protest against them?

Living under a murdering dictator must be bloody horrendous

Putin has a point though, Neo Nazism is very strong in Ukraine

You do know that Russia defines a nazi as anyone who is anti-Russian ?

The rest of the world has a different definition. There are many more "classical nazis" in Russia than Ukraine anyway.

Acknowledging the Ukraine has a strong fascist element is not to support Russia or their expansionist policies.
Yours is the same argument used to describe people opposed to zionist expansion as anti- semite.

I know nothing about zionism or the arguments about that.

But I do know that Russia equates nazis as anyone who is against Russia. I probably qualify on that score.

The correlation of holding people responsible for their leadership's actions is ridiculous. I have been to Russia a few times and lived with ordinary families. They are the same as anyone else - mostly hard working, decent people who want happy, prosperous lives. Yes, I was aware of some heavy drinking and also the mafia, but only because I was looking for it. The people are coerced and lied to by their government, which is a horrible shame. They started to open up firstly under Gorbachev, more so under Yeltsin and this was even carried on initially under Putin. What we are seeing is the what most of us know - when someone is in power, unchallenged, for too long they lose their judgment and sense of reason. It is why most countries have checks and balances on this. I think The Clamp has it right in his assessments.

To say that Russian people are responsible and deserve everything they get is akin to saying that we are responsible for the Iraq war and the destruction of that country under Blair, or the ruination of Libya under Cameron. We, at least, were able to speak out against and we vote for our governments, so you could argue we were more responsible for those atrocities than the Russian people are for this.

With regards to another comment that someone made about people getting the government they deserve - would you apply that to African nations where their people are impoverished by their corrupt governments? No, because it is racist and stereotyping, so apply the same standards here. A bit more thought and less emotion would be better.

Let us hope that the war soon ends, Putin is removed and replaced with a progressive leader, and that both countries can move forward. This is best for them and for the whole world.

So actually you are the one that knows nothing as pointed out elsewhere. Lol.

I see a post from a man denying your post, talking about ordinary hard working friendly people.

Support for Ukraine is more than flying a flag, just as acknowledging this war is about moving Western military capabilities to the Russian borders isn't support for Russian aggression.

Nor is accepting putin has a point when he raises the issue of a strong fascist influence in the lives of Ukranians.

I haven't called all Russians Nazis, or the equivalent, I've just said I don't have much sympathy for them - that's quite different. As an aside, on Germany, I do blame the German citizens for a lot of what happened - they turned against Jewish people and were happy to go along with the direction their country took.

Living under a murdering dictator must be bloody horrendous
Yes I agree, but when someone's child, who is an eye-witness, calls them and tells them that what Russia are doing, and they point blank refuse to believe it, I find it difficult to be sympathetic towards them. Are they suffering as the Ukrainians are? No they are not. Is it close? No it's not.
