Using frozen assets and/or the interest accrued from them is not an easy option. If think if it was it would have happened, however the legal precedent is significant and could undermine (amongst other matters) the stability of the euro.

I think it will remain something the politicians talk about as a threat to Putin but in reality highly unlikely. Politicians eh……..
As ever, we live in unprecedented times

I guess the problem with appropriating the Russian money is that we are a country of laws.

Say we (or we as a collection of countries) appropriated the money, gave it to Ukraine to spend, we could be held liable to pay the money back to Russia if a relevant court decided that we must.

Imagine being the politician who had to explain that we had to give £300bn of taxpayers money to Russia.

I think there is strong precedent for the UK gove
rnment to successfully defend such a case. But you're never 100% certain to win a legal action and we can't afford to lose, so realistically we'd have to settle, still at gargantuan cost.

As with so.many things (see also taxing wealth, bringing public services back into public ownership, spending more on defence) some things are always 'almost impossible' until they are aren't.

Yeh. I just think it's less about how possible it is and more about the risk involved

I think its a very easy emotional response to think we should just appropriate that money. I know I've certainly feel that way. But that's an excellent point you make, and very likely why we haven't gone down that road. Especially now with everything Trump is now doing. It would be very easy to see him making waves and dishing out punitive measures to anyone who had appropriated that money.

Agree with what you say. I just wonder what will happen with all that cash. Does it just sit there earning interest until Trump orders it to be given to Putin as part of his 'peace' plan? That would help Putins rearmament coffers somewhat.

He won’t if it’s used to buy US weapons and reduce Europe’s trade deficit. An easy win for the narcissist that also helps Ukraine.

Remember the bloke who asked Zelensky why he wasn't wearing a suit? He is now a victim.

He's just playing the victim. Why did the BBC even give the shit airtime? I resent that use of my license fee.

Mrs sent me a few of these types of clips yesterday, theyre on instagram if you have it? (hopefully you can still view it).

Its started a viral craze in Ukraine of people post mock videos of getting dressed up in suits etc to go to shelters when sirens sound. This is one such video.
