Ukraine is a very different kettle though, its size, proximity, resources and so forth. To old skool Russians like Putin it’s Russia.

It doesn't matter. If Russia could have stopped Finland and Sweden joining Nato, they would have. If they can stop Ukraine joining, they will. But it doesn't have to be up to Russia. If we support Ukraine as we should, and defeat Russia as we should, then they'll be in no place to stop Ukraine joining Nato.

No, I believe peace keeping force could work. But my understanding is we simply don’t have the capacity to provide sufficiently for, even as part of a coalition. So it’s a non starter. Perhaps a non European UN led corp could though?

From which countries would the peace keeping force be from.

But yes, diplomatic channels always must be kept open. It can and does work.

No one is saying close diplomatic channels. But if there's enough force in place to stop Russia, then they'll stop, and if there isn't, then they'll break all agreements. Agreements mean nothing to Russia.

No thanks, not necessary nor good use of time.

Ok. You repeatedly fall for Russian propaganda but refuse to watch it, so you can learn how it works, and can avoid falling for it in future.

Russian state TV can be a goldmine of information. Obviously you must have all your antennae turned up to the max.

A long time ago, the same host complained to the audience about the cost of Shahed drones from Iran. He asked 'why can't Russia make them ourselves?'. The lesson to learn here, was that he was preparing the Russian TV viewers for Russia to manufacture its own Shahed drones.

In another show, the commentator said 'I don't know one pensioner who does not contribute part of their pension to the war effort to help our boys'. Here the lesson learned was that Russia was struggling to fund the war effort, and was pleading for contributions from pensioners.

Valuable information, but only if you have an open mind.

So with, as you say, the war continuing, how do you feel about Starmers headline news that he's ready to commit troops to Ukraine?

I understand that it was for peacekeeping purposes, so pretty irrelevant in that case, but it also seems to have highlighted some difference in opinion with allies and Nato.

I'm absolutely fine with Starmer's comments. He's showing strength rather that weakness.

If he's given the binary choice on would the UK provide troops, yes or no - one answer shows strength and the other is a bit pathetic. He's not actually committed troops to do anything, he's just saying that we support Ukraine, stand against Russia, and will continue to do so.

Meanwhile Trump is having his belly tickled.

Hopefully. But I’m with Dorset, I’ve seen little evidence of United European Defence since the end of the Cold War.
I agree it needs a sea change. Europe was asleep at the wheel, focusing on reducing costs, Russian oil/gas deliveries (mummy Merkel pals with Putin etc).
Times are changing very fast and i think Europe is trying to catch up with the situation 🤞🏻🤞🏻.

To achieve, it would effectively double the financial pain most households are currently feeling btw, after the toughest budget in 50 years. So sacrifices have to be seen in that context. Put it this way, are you prepared to give up the Albion, your annual holiday(s) or the like to improve security (assuming you put food and fuel first!)? Nearly everyone will say no, it would be deeply unpopular. Until we were invaded, naturally, then everyone would bleat about why our governments didn’t do more pre-crisis?! Nope, we never learn. But that’s democracy for yer! :)
Perhaps we should properly tax the super rich like they did after 1945. That brought in a lot of money. Can't imagine why anyone needs billions of pounds, anyway. The Sun could start a campaign called, 'Cough up for your Country' to get the masses on board. 😉

a view from Washington...
“We have zero intelligence that Putin is interested in a real peace deal right now,” one of the congressional officials said. ...current intelligence shows Putin still believes he can wait out Ukraine and Europe to eventually control all of Ukraine.
