I've just started taking up running this year in a bit to get fit, lost about 20lbs so not far to go now and I'm starting to really enjoy it.

My question is a simple one; am i alone in finding that for about the first 5 minutes of my jog I just cannot be arsed and keep thinking 'this isn't gonna last long today' but once I get past a certain point it's all ok? When you first get out do you always feel up for it or are you like me, need to get the heart rate up to a certain point before you feel like you can run any sort of distance?

Also what training aids do people use? I was gonna get a Nike+ thing for my birthday but I really don't need an ipod so got a Garmin Forerunner 305 instead. Gotta say it's just about the greatest gadget i've ever owned, great for motivating you to go out and great for seeing progress made from when you first start using it (assuming you aren't that fit to start with obviously!). Measures Heart Rate, Speed and Distance and then tracks you on Google Maps and Google Earth when you get back. Just an example of some of the things people have used it for in Brighton recently: Garmin Connect - Explore

Strongly recommend it to anyone who enjoys running and hasn't already got a GPS device.

quite agree with you. i often find myself 'not being arsed' about five minutes BEFORE i go for a run so usually go for a bacon sanger instead. as for equipment, i was going to get a george foreman grill but have since found out that a good old frying pan does the trick just as well!!!

I run a bit every now and again although depends on how busy I am. I think the first 5- 10 mins are a killer and I always think I can't do this today. But it's about finding your rhythm. Once you're into it, then it's ok.

That gadget looks good, how much?

I can't run because of knee problems but similar thing occurs when I swim. First couple of lengths are fine but between 5 and 10 it is a struggle but after that comfortable swim upto 1800m. I think you'll find it is just about getting into a rythm and blowing the cobwebs away.

I get that too, first mile or so I really can't be arsed, but once I've got into it then I'm fine. I've got a Nike+ and I agree it's one of those gadgets that runners think are fantastic!

I started running again this month after a year of inactivity. I have lost 11lbs since 6th July and am now running 5k a day in two separate shifts, 2 miles at lunch time and 1.1 miles in the evening.

Stepping it up next week. Get a Nike and IPOD device it is superb

as a fairly decent standard middle distance runner during my teens (until the birds and booze kicked in) on the long runs i did i always found that id start off too fast then after 5-10 minutes or so i couldnt be arsed cos i was knackered and didn't know why. like sneaky george said, its all about the slow starts. that garmin is top draw, havent got one myself but have ran with plenty of people with it. nearly got the forerunner 405 last winter, but decided against it so id have more beer tokens, students ay :drink:

I've been running for around 10 years and do 3x8 mile runs a week. Totally agree with the first 5-10 minutes being a drag.......I'm sure it's as much a mental barrier as physical. Overall though I really enjoy it and that's what keeps me going.

As for gadgets, I've got my trusty Ipod but nothing else. I have a number of runs where I've measured the distance using a map and ruler: 6, 8 and 9 miles. I can add measured loops on for further distance. One was a bit tricky so I drove the course in a car to get the distance.

If you're still living in the stone age then you'll probaby really appreciate this website, much easier than a ruler and a map!

I don't get running.

95% of all runners I see seem to be in pain.
Their body is rocking and rolling, there's no 'spring' in their step, and their face is contorted with pain.
Out cycling with 2 friends we were going against a race, on a lovely sunny sunday morning. We were comfortably cruising along, chattting away at 25mph.
All the while a 1000+ people were painfully running the other way.
It seemed most were looking at us, very jealous.

Oh and to get where we were, we'd already riden about 50 miles, through beautiful Sussex countryside.

Well, running is pretty hard work, and when you can start going distances of 5-10-15 miles then it's quite an achievement. As much as I know cycling is excellent exercise I would see it as a way of getting from A-B better than the bus rather than just going out for a ride, whereas you don't really run into town.

25mph? that's more than just cruising!

I know, I am a bit prehistoric. The missus does laugh at me with my ruler, string and maps. I did take a look at the website and am seriously considering getting one.
