Well, we usually win the games you say we "put out a team to lose". At the same time, De Zerbi played a super strong starting eleven against League One strugglers Charlton in the League Cup, so there's clearly no magic solution to winning the games.
Whilst I can't say I was particularly happy after the Charlton loss, I can look back now and say that Charlton got away with murder. We absolutely battered them - 78% possession, 1.87 xG (to their 0.42 xG half of which came from 1 shot outside the box) - that's more than we created v Arsenal and v Aston Villa, 18 shots, 6 on target, hit the bar, had one clear penalty not given and another great shout. Putting the ball in the back of the net aside, we did everything right that day. 99 times out of 100, Brighton win that game. Sometimes that happens but you can't fault the manager for not trying to win it.

The Villa game was an afront to all of us who turned up that day. There was no intent to win in that team selection, it was offensive to the competition and the fans.

There may be no magic solution to winning cup games, but there certainly is an easy one to losing them and Charlton and Villa are worlds apart in comparison.

No. If you can't create above 2.00 against a bottom table League One team while playing nearly the strongest possible team, you haven't played well and won't win 99 out of 100.

The game was dire. You may have been happy with the performance but I agree with Roberto De Zerbi on this one: it was shit.

If the xG score is (rounded up and down) essentially Brighton 2-0 Charlton or at worst 2-1, then yes, we should have won.

I was there (as were several thousand other Albion fans) and was not happy with the performance, and still am not happy that we didn't convert so many glorious chances (the xG doesn't even touch upon the amount of unconverted crosses there were in the game). That doesn't mean that we therefore weren't the better team and deserved to lose the game. Statistically, and evidentially (by just watching the extended highlights) we created more than enough opportunities to win the game, and conceded almost no real chances. On any other day (especially under RDZ) we a) put one away, and b) don't squander a lead in a penalty shootout.

Back to my original point though, that game and the Villa one are incomparable. Villa was not a fair fight whatsoever (literally men against boys in a senior cup competition) and Potter set out to lose it. Even you can't say that RDZ set out to lose the Charlton game.

Losing to Charlton was a shitshow. As was losing to Villa with an Under 11s team out and Sheffield Wednesday in the FA Cup later that season. And drawing with League Two Newport County the following season

Like I said then.

"Yeah that League Cup game with Potter trying out the U21s of the club was not one we thought we'd win."
Not with that line up i'm sure we didn't

And to those of us, who'd bought tickets and dutifully trudged out that evening to get to the ground and discover we'd thrown the game before kick off ... well that's the sort of thing that drives a wedge between manager and fans. And remember this wasn't the Champions League version of Villa, they were shit back then. We were at home. The negativity of that selection was almost impossible to understand.

Anyway, i'm going to stop polluting a thread about a fine young prospect. I want us to play our best available team, but if Ruairi does start i'll be cheering him on

I have high hopes for McConville* and look forward to seeing him play at Naarich. But losing Igor is a major blow, as I don't think Dunk or Webster can be relied on to stay fit for the whole of the rest of the season.

* this means absolutely nothing as (unlike in the rest of my life) I am an incurable football optimist and have high hopes for every single young player that comes through from tbe U23's. And only a small % of them turn into the players I'd hoped for.

Don’t think I’ve ever seen McConville kick a ball. Is he upto it if called upon in some upcoming games?
He's made his full debut for Northern Ireland so you would hope he has something about him

When I’ve seen McConville play he looks very assured. He’s tall and seems a good ball player.
All with the caveat that he’s been playing at a lower level.
However, why not give him a try. Play him next to Webster and if things go a bit Pete Tong we can always bring on JPVH as a second half sub.

Yeah would be very surprised to see Igor again this season. If its a torn hamstring then its at least 3 months, usually 4, and then needs to get back into match fitness.
Igor is having surgery, if it's anything like the surgery Danny Welbeck had in 2021 to repair his hamstring then he could be back in a couple of months. Danny was out from early October making his return to the team on Boxing Day. A similar projected return for Igor could see him return at the start of April when we've still got 9 or so games to go.

Although having said that reports seem to say a thigh muscle rather than hamstring, so more than likely a quad tear which would probably rule him out for the season.
