Back up, on his wages?

Depends on what he wants really.. I don't know the bloke. Does he want to spend his last few years earning a bunch of money and just wait for his retirement, or does he want to kick-start his career again and would gladly choose the best club for that rather than the club that could pay him the best money? In that case it turns more interesting. He is only 28 and has occasionally shown that he is a good or even very good footballer - if he as a person is mature and hungry enough to make the most out of it, I think GP & co would not be entirely against giving him a 1+1 year contract.

Can you show me anywhere that someone has suggested paying him the wages he is allegedly on at Chelsea? No, you can't............any speculation that we might possibly (but unlikely) be interested has come with the caveat that it would only be at the right price; that price would be a fraction of his last wages.

You can do a simple equation. Let's say a lower level PL midfielder costs you £15m fee and £40k per week on a 4 year contract. That is cheap by PL standards. That costs you say £25m over the course of the contract. You could pay Ross Barkley £120k per week on a 4 year deal and it will cost you around £25m.

I wouldn't touch him personally, but I don't know why so many people are referring to wage demands and costs - he might not have that many attractive offers. When you think what Jahanbakhsh and Locadia cost the club, if Barkley cost you £25m in total for a 4 year contract, then depending on your research into his attitude and character it maybe worth a punt. My research on attitude and character would suggest it isn't, but then I know very little really.

My opinion is he will not be cheap, this is all. Wages aside, he has questionable attitude, questionable ability and questionable fitness. It's a big fat no from me.

Get the maths - but I wouldn't consider a four year contract, nor would I consider paying him £120K a week. If we were to take a punt on reviving his career (and it's a big if) it would be something like a 1+1 contract on about £30K a week maximum!
Would we do it? Probably not. Would he take it? - or would he insist on bigger wages and head off to Italy, China or wherever? Probably the latter ...................

Your island is second only to South America and former Yugoslavia when it comes to hyping young players when they play a couple of good games or have a good season.

About five minutes into their careers you frequently "Uhhh, this is the new Gascoigne/Shearer/Rooney" and the players either believe it themselves and get lazy, or they feel the massive pressure and self-medicate with booze, babes and other forms of dumb entertainment. Then they struggle and just as quickly gets labelled as horrendous people and footballers... and either give up trying to be the best or believe in what people say and lose all confidence. Very few manage to escape the impact of these things.

Indeed, media hype has an awful lot to answer for too.

His wages are currently £0 per week.

I keep seeing reference to his wages. What wages? Unless there is demand from several clubs all bidding against each other his wages will be whatever the most attractive club to him offer.

I udnerstand this, but I am of the view he will not be cheap. And his wages might not be whatever the most attractive club has to offer, there have been plenty of players who would rather sit it out until some mug comes up with the money or they get desperate. Jack Wiltshire is a prime example of this; he was bleating in many papers about not having a club a year ago and sat out the first half of last season. I find it hard to believe there was not a single club who wanted him; I find it easier to believe his demands were too much. Some mug club from abroad eventually signed him up....then he retired.

He also look a bit overweight when he played against us briefly last season, his arse certainly filled his shorts.

I don’t disagree, as said I wouldn’t touch him either, but wages need to be balanced with him being a free agent and whether he has the desire or not. I think he probably does join a list of players who just enjoy the riches and lose their motivation. Has earned supposedly £30-40m at Chelsea?

He’s 28, if motivated by money he’ll go US or China or somewhere. If like Welbeck he’s motivated by first team football in the PL and seeing out his career on a high, then who knows.

My Chelsea STH mate says he's very thick and can't keep off the booze. Unable or unwilling to follow tactics. Connolly Mark 2.

In that case, if true, definitely a no-no then, 1 year +1 deal on cut price wages or not. Shame - he was a very good player at Everton, and did well for England back in the day too.

Interviewed him once. I have never met a thicker person in my life. Wonderful player, when on form.

What did you ask him?

Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

It was for some Premier League charity video. We asked him basic questions about what it felt like to go through the everton academy, how hard it was etc. And he just looked blankly, thought about it , and then said "good". We then got him to read basic statements to camera, turns out he can barely read.

Would be a decent addition to our team. I'm with GT49er on this.

That’s no need to knock him .

If a player has been released by a club and is therefore a free agent, can he sign for a new club after the transfer deadline?

p.s. I'm not interested in us signing Barkley.
