Banned for the next 2 internationals. I think he has got off lightly and think that is due to the amount of play acting that had been going on by Porugal and the complete incompetence of SGE. What are others views on this?

Personally, I am still of the opinion that there was no intent involved, and the foot in the groin of the Portuguese feller was nothing more than an accident. Therefore, no I do not think he got off lightly.

What gets me is that England get the stiff end of a ban while yet again other teams are treated differently. Figo headbutts a player, gets a yellow card and now Fifa can't do anything about it.

Double standards????

I dont think we can complain about 2 match ban, bit on harsh side but could be worse. Sven hardly helped with his comments saying the red was fair enough, which implied violent conduct.

Argentina's Maxi Rodriguez was banned for two games and fined £2,400 for throwing punches at the end of the Germany game... Seems to be standard although his team mate Leandro Cufre got double both the ban and fine for kicking a German.

If we assume that Rooney is guilty of stamping on another player then a two game suspension and a pittance of a fine is getting off lightly. However my opinion is that he was innocent, a blinkered view you may think, there was no forcefull downward pressure when he placed his foot in the groin of a man who had been fouling him a split second earlier. I firmly believe that he was still trying to bulldoze his way past and away from both his opponents who were actually fouling him, all that was on his mind was getting to the ball, nothing more.

I just can't believe he had no idea what he was doing. OK it wasn't a ball crashing stamp but supposing it had been him lying on the ground and Ronaldo applying stud to gonad? We'd have all been going ape shit.

Fact is; he blew it. And Sven is partly to blame for playing him in a position that was bound to get him frustrated eventually.

Sigh. Yet again my expectations at this world cup were the result of hope triumphing over past experience. I have been fortunate enough to see England win it once which I guess many on here haven't. I must learn to count my blessings and be more realistic in future.

I think the punishment sounds about right.
I haven't seen a more obvious stamp since Cantona was in his heydey. And all those who don't see a stamp - I can only assume you are so bitter about England's exit that your judgement is severely impaired.

I totally agree, and I am still think that (despite what the ref said afterwards) Rooney was sent off for the push on that c**t Ronaldo, not for stamping.

Rooney was guilty as f*** over that stamping. He might have the brain of a retarded pond-newt but he has magic feet that do EXACTLY what some basic primeval instinct buried deep in his head tells them to do. That was no more an accident than Leon Knight leaving a trailing foot in on FDM's head the season before he signed for the Albion. :nono:

Last word on SGE shiould niot have taken Walcott and Jenas if he had no intention of playing them but have taken Le Tissier and Shearer and done the same as Carragher come on for 30 secs and take the penalties at least we would have scored 2 penalties.

True, the ref didn't appear at all interested in Rooney until ronald o whinged in on the events.

Still, knowing Rooney's self-compelled attitude and temperament, it's difficult to imagine that he wasn't taking his studs to the portugal player because he was pissed off.
In any normal circumstance, ANY player getting sent off for that as a total accident would have strongly pleaded with the ref that it was all a terrible mistake. Rooney walked with just a rolling of his eyes and another little tantrum.

I think Beckham, as captain, knew that we were fielding a person who has little respect for any authority, even if wearing the England shirt. We've seen Rooney be a pig-headed tosser before in an international, waving aside his captain's words.

I've said it before, but illustrated in all this, is that England's administration allowed this person to recuperate from a broken bone and gain match, and competitive fitness, and all during a World Cup Final. Personally, I have never heard of - or could imagine - such a thing! Talk about a red-carpet treatment. That, and the outrageous inclusion in a limited squad, of a 17-year-old that Eriksson hadn't even seen playing before, underlines the complete and utter stupidity behind the selection of that manager.

We just have stupid buggers running the show at the FA, so no wonder it's just a clown-fest for us at the World Cup.
