Rooney

Rooney was sent off by an over-zealous referee after a petulant shove on Ronaldo - silly thing to do maybe, but not deserving of a red card (violent conduct? Do me a favour), and certainly not deserving of some of the abuse he's taken since, especially from sections of his own support.

Scots, Welsh and other un-English I can take labelling him a thug, pea-brain or any other playground insult - it's jealousy. But I can't understand why some others are determined to bring him down.

Rooney's the biggest talent this country has seen since Gazza yet it seems the typical Sun reader won't be happy until he ends up the same way, before bemoaning the fact that this country's biggest talent since Gazza spunked his talent up the wall. :shootself

Not so fast safeway. Rooney was sent off for stamping on a bloke, which wasn't helped by his reactions after he did it. He was not smart enough to plead innocence or appear incredulous at his 'accidental treading'.

Let's NOT forget that he got a path to that place by courtesy of being allowed to regain match-fitness in a World Cup Finals Tournament(!!). He IS a gobby undisciplined adolescent, albeit with football skill. He doesn't respect any authority on the pitch, doesn't accept substitution with grace.

Violent conduct, even in a split-secondary moment in the heat of competition, has seen more experienced men than him take an early shower. The ref over-zealous? Hmm, he seemed pretty sharp to me, and I'm really not very sure he made a wrong decision.

"Bringing him down" isn't what I'd enjoy either, but teams win World Cups with good discipline and by boxing clever (see Italy's efforts in the last few weeks, quite admirable imo). Gatusso might prove me wrong and blow a fuse against Viera tonight, but so far they've been great and are reaping rewards from it.

I hope Rooney shows sense and composure and holds the WC Trophy high in 4 years.

Rooney WASN'T sent off for any 'stamp', despite what the ref might have put in his post-match report. Watch the footage and you'll see the free kick had been awarded and that was that until Ronaldo got in Rooney's face which led the shove. As soon as that happened, watch the ref and you'll see him immediately call Rooney over and show him the red card.

"he got a path to that place by courtesy of being allowed to regain match-fitness in a World Cup Finals Tournament" - So what?! With the possible exception of Alex Ferguson, people would have gone mental had everything possible not been done to get Rooney match fit. How on earth is the FA pulling out all the stops for arguably our biggest star a bad thing?

I wouldn't say he's undisciplined - how often has he got into trouble playing for Man United? I'm sure aforementioned Fergie doesn't take any shit, so perhaps the finger needs to be pointed at the England management for his most recent misdemeanor.

I think someone on the BBC made a good point - those microphones are not there for fun are they?

The "So what" about his red carpet allowance to get match practice in a World Cup Final should more occur to HIM - regardless of the FA or public desire for him to play. Yes, they/we gave him carte blanche, but he's actually not clever enough to respond by staying on the pitch in....what was it, his first full-fitness game?

We KNOW he's not disciplined, the cameras have shown him swearing with his screwed-up face right at linesmen and refs, "f*** off"s rampant from his easily-read lips.
Beckham restraining him, as England Captain and experienced victim of previous decisions, but Rooney telling him to f*** off as well.
Substituted when not fully fit or fully effective in a previous game, our sportsman threw every reachable toy out of the pram with Neville trying to admonish him or calm him down. Still he ranted and raved, even just-off his magic red carpet ride.

Hey, it doesn't take a genius to see what kind of child is being nurtured here - a nasty little shit by any other name, but because of his talent people stand in awe and say "live with it".....except NOT your 'over-zealous referee' (who was probably man of the match tonight in the WCFinal!).

If you think I'm on a witch-hunt safeway, you're wrong, I'm just telling it like it is. If he was not as enigmatically talented on the ball, if he was not seen as our 'great white hope', you'd be telling it as certainly as that as well. It's time to get real about Rooney, because part of being a professional footballer is NOT losing your cool and getting red-carded, not showing a shining example to kids of how to abuse linesmen. It isn't just about barging past defenders leaving them sprawling and wellying a football.
.....unless you believe Rooney is the way forward and Zidane was expelled by a dodgy ref tonight in the biggest event in any sport?

Ferguson is extremely well-versed with telling players they are not bigger than the club, that he can drop them and hold them to a 5-year contract languishing in the reserves or shipped off unceremoniously to another planet if he likes (see also Jaap Stamm). Those match/win/goal bonuses are probably lucrative, and no sponsor wants to pin their name on some plonker for 20 million a year if that plonker ain't showing up on telly every week for millions to see wearing their boots/logos or being celebrated for their wealth, beautiful girlfriend, and choice of diet soda.
Money talks, Rooney only walks.

If any one player, no matter how talented, is seen to cost England a possible World Cup - there are many many people who consider England more than just a club side. It's not Sven's, it's not the F.A.'s, it's not Rooneys - It's our side, it's my side - and I (and most other supporters) become a NIMBE. 'Not In My Beautiful England'.

Rooney will probably be forgiven, more so than Beckham was for 3 years after the Argentina sending-off, and because people want to relate to him as the new George Best or Gazza or Cantona.
Ronaldo is a dick for his part in it, whatever Rooney did or didn't do, he won't soon be forgiven at all.

Referee's notebooks come with his name, number and the word DISSENT already printed inside. It saves time.

He has also been sent off 3 times in 3 years now, thats quite a lot.

This basiacally highlights the fact that FIFA aren't sure he meant to do it.

If someone deliberatly when out to stamp on another player's 'spuds' then I'd like to think he'd get more than a 2 match ban! However, he was facing the other way and his facial expression showed no sign of malace.

For my money I don't think he meant to do it. I think it was going to be a yellow if anything before Ronaldo got involved. You could tell by the way the ref reacted after Rooney stupidly pushed the cheat.

It looks like an accident and although the reff says he sent him off for the stamp, its obvious it was for the push on Ronaldo and after seeing the tv footage he changed his mind.
