Apparently Gus turned him down - we've got enought squad players - we need players who will improve the team...

I'll give you them.

"I've been given assurances, blah blah"
"It was never about money, blah blah"
"I realise now that this is still the place to be, blah blah"
"I just want to win trophies and the manager has convinced me I can do that here, blah blah"

That ought to cover it.

You missed out ...

"I want to spend the rest of my career at United"

I think it will be that the American Shysters had to stump up more cash. Not because he was scared by some idiots in balaclavas.

Rooney played a blinder.

I'm not so sure he did. He's damaged his relationship with the fans there, and he's damaged his relationship with his team-mates, who now now all know that he thinks they're SHITE.

I can't see him being welcomed back into the dressing room with open arms.

What toy throwing antics?

He said he wasn't going to sign a contract. He didn't talk to the press or demand a transfer. Man U leaked it all and claimed he had injuries, he responded to them.

In my opinion he's done very little wrong

Nah. He will walk in - give them a big smile - they will know he got his extra money. They will also have thought about life after him - and know they look pretty ordinary.

The best players get treated differently. That is the way of the world.

I think he did well. And who cares what Evra thinks.

Pathetic how a club goes down on it knees to save a footballer.

Don't agree actually. All the talk was about "player power" this week, but I actually think SAF handled this very well. The player has realised there is a whole lot more to walking out on them for extra spondoolies the other side of the city.

The club has basically said, well we'll just do without you then, the fans have rallied with the usual "no player is bigger than the club" and yet SAF made sure he also left the door open, so that he could get Rooney around the table again.

I would love to know the detail of the deal though. Forget the usual rubbish about "this contract means he will have spent 11 yerars at the club" because we've just seen someone can easily be on the verge of going with nearly 2 years left on the deal.

What I'd like to know is whether Rooney has an exit clause should they fail to win the title in the next 2 or 3 seasons. Would that trigger him to be available for say £30m or whatever?

Where this doesn't quite add up is that for all of the stupis way of going about it, Rooney did make a valid point, Man Utd haven't been signing players of a high enough quality over the last 2 years. That hasn't changed in the last 48 hrs.

See your point, but I think most of them have been through similar sorts of negotiations - albeit, not played out in the press. I doubt they'll care, unless it means they can ask for a pay rise.

I always come back to the story about Paul Scholes. I know some people don't like him, but the story goes that when it was time to renegotiate his contract, he walked in to the boardroom, without agent or lawyer, and said "just pay me whatever you think I'm worth, I'll sign", and that was that.

To translate this into the normal world. Rooney had effectivly handing in his notice at work. His bosses have offered him more money, and he has decided to stay. BUT have the reasons why he wanted to leave actually changed...is it just about the money? It can't be, can it? He will not be with them in 5 years!

I think they had a good long look into the abyss. I am not saying that is where they were heading - but a team that has lost the last of Tevez, Ronaldo and Rooney is not looking too bright. And it would be harder to recruit. And United need the Champions League to pay the interest on the debt.

United are a good club though. There are a few chairman who would have paid him a lot less.

That does show some class mind.

Money grabbing little fucker and his agent.
Probably a master stroke by Taggert, who will sell him in January, and Real.City or Chelsea will have to pay a load more for him cos he has a 5 year contract.

It's certainly true, they are not the team they were. After Rooney, what decent players have you got ? Van Der Saar will be gone at the end of the season, Rios knees won't last much longer, and Giggs and Scholes have not got long left. Hargreaves won't play again at any decent level.

Berbatov is hit & miss, Nani occassionally good performance. Johnny Evans isn't going to make it. Own may play 10 mins before he breaks down again. So, you're basically let with Evra and Vidic.

One of the guys on BBC has cut straight to the nub of it;

United supporter Liam Bradford, who is the assistant editor of the Red News fanzine told Radio 5 live:
"..."I don't know whether this has been planned all along and this was just some elaborate mind game that Sir Alex Ferguson was playing with Wayne Rooney on board..."

When I first read that, I thought you were referring to Rooney and his agent as looking into the abyss. that would be an exaggeration, but I do think they had an insight into what it's like to leave Man Utd under a clud, and on teh back of a fall-out with SAF, and I don't think they liked it.

Let's face it, for a thick Northerner who looks like his favourite pastime should involve tyres hanging from a rope, he's got a pretty good lifestyle. He is (was, but will be again) worshipped by the fans of a massive club, has the support of one of the best managers British football has seen, and has got players around him like Scholes and Giggs that show you have a club for life if you just put your head down and work. Maybe he started to question whether the grass was indeed greener.

What I find puzzling is that, having tested the water, a number of top clubs like City, Chelsea, Real Madrid and Inter all made noises about being interested in signing him if he became available.

Terry, Tevez and Ronaldo have all said they'd love to have him at their respective clubs. He seemed in a pretty strong negotiating position for a move away, and I can't believe his Man Utd contract is more lucrative than anything City or Real would have offered him.

I can see why SAF would want to lock him in for 5 years - he's seen Beckham and Ronaldo return from World Cups as pariahs only to win the fans over again, so a few goals from Rooney and it might all be forgotten.

However, this is all very unlike Man Utd and an indirect complement to Man City, who ARE the club showing the ambition Rooney referred to.

From a different view, Fergie has done well. If Rooney didn't sign, then Man Utd would have had to sell him for a 'reduced' value for a quick sale.

Now Rooney's signed, Fergie could turn round and now try and sell Rooney and get a ridiculous fee, waiting for the amount they want.

Probably not the most well worded proposal, but then I have had a few lunch time beers. Work could be interesting this afternoon.

(Ignoring the fact these amounts are ridiculous)

Wayne Rooney, best England striker for some years. Earning £90k a week.

International team mates, Frank and Terry probably earning double that at Chelsea.

Just seen team mates Tevez and Ronaldo move to earn probably more than double that.

It's no real suprise he's tried to get every little penny he could, is it.

My gf just gave me her opinion of the whole situation. It was a conspiracy between rooney and ferguson to get more money made available off the Glazers to spend on transfers.

Dont be stupid was my response:laugh::laugh::laugh:
