A masterstroke from Ferguson - he simply added .00 to the end of his salary. Wayne thinks hes earning 10 million a week.

I think the Glazers probably realised that with the green&gold campaign still in their ear holes, that losing Rooney would be a PR catastrophe for them. I wouldn't be surprised if Wayne has been shown some spread sheets showing there is £30m to spend in Jan, and someone has folded the sheet so that the '-' sign was not visible.

This has blown up in Rooney's face a bit, the Fergie press conference now looks like a bluff call which Rooney wasn't expecting. He then played the ambition card, the Glazers then get their man confirming that they have got ambition, look Wayne's stayed.

All very unsavoury, Wayne's behaviour, the Glazers. Oh well, more important things like Yeovil to worry about!!

From a different view, Fergie has done well. If Rooney didn't sign, then Man Utd would have had to sell him for a 'reduced' value for a quick sale.

Now Rooney's signed, Fergie could turn round and now try and sell Rooney and get a ridiculous fee, waiting for the amount they want.

Probably not the most well worded proposal, but then I have had a few lunch time beers. Work could be interesting this afternoon.

United had no choice other than to offer a longer and presumably better contract. All Rooney had to do was sit tight and wait for next summer then under the "Webster Ruling" The Football Supporters' Federation - Rooney could leave Man Utd this summer for free

he could have bought out the remainder of his contract for an amount equal to his final years salary, about £5m, plus United would have got a bit of compo, say another couple of mil. No one was going to sign him in January when they could have got him in the summer for next to nothing United and the Glasiers were in the shit, facing a loss of perhaps £30m, so there only option was to offer him more and extend his contract. Basically, he can still be sold whenever it suits Rooney or United, it's just that United will now get a proper open market fee, so they both win.

Massive PR stunt.

Puts pressure on board to spend more on players and takes the blame away from Sir Alex for them being rubbish.

i think there might be a bit of Fergie insisting that Glazer sorted this out or he'd be off too. theres been very little spending there and it shows, with too much reliance on Giggs and Scholes, who should have been put out to stud at Championship clubs by now.
