Genuine question. Not a big follower of the Premier league or Manchester United but from what I've seen he's been off the boil since the end of last season and seems to be living on another planet now.

Is he about to implode like Gascoigne or not bother anymore because he has no ambition or does he just need a change of scenery and a new challenge to re-ignite his career?

Quite possibly, while he isn't based around only pure pace as Owen was, he IS based to a massive degree on sharpness, something we haven't seen from him in a long time.

He needs to sort out his personal life, and find pastures new at the right place, even if that means forgoing some of his huge salary expectations. If he does that, I can see him bouncing back because he's still young.

But yes, his personal life is absolutely the key to the way his life (and form on the pitch) progresses from here. The very fact that he is out nobbing some high clas tart is surely a sign of how unhappy he is in other parts of his life. Money clearly doesn't buy you happiness.

obviously, he knew that the press knew about his private life during the world cup and that was playing on his mind. throw in the fact that he asked for his transfer in august and obviously hasn't played well since then, and i think he is just utterly fed up at united and therefore isnt showing his best for them - his best performances this season have, after all, come in and england shirt

the quicker he gets his move the better for all concerned

depends if his head straight involves leaving his wife. i think that a move abroad away from all the shit he has had over here would do wonders, but apparently colleen does not want to leave the north west, let alone england. her sister has some sort of disability and suffered a stroke in the last few years and she pops home to liverpool on a regular basis

it could come down to a choice of stay with the wife in england or get rid and go to spain

I think Rooney will be pissed off because Michael Owen is there always pointing the finger. Owen is a "clean" character who doesn't resort to laddish behaviour, and I think that might get to oor Wayne.

I think the jilted red hoards would make his life an absolute living hell if he takes his toys over t'other side of the city. Perhaps his only get-out is to bugger off abroad now, but he seems barely able to string a sentence together in English - let alone some new exotic tongue (!). I suppose he could always try to improve his range of expressive grunts, although I've no idea where he's likely to get in the necessary practice...

All in all, I have a funny feeling that in a few years we'll all be looking back realising that his best days were all done & dusted before he reached his 24th Birthday.

I think we may have seen the best of him already, sadly.

Due to the way the Premier League is, he hardly has any options regarding clubs he could join at home - Chelsea or Man City. That's pretty much it.

He would get dogs' abuse for joining City - he'd be taking a massive risk.

Which leaves playing abroad. I just can't see him having the maturity to go and learn a language and behave discretely off the pitch.

In the last year, we've seen countless stories which indicate a man out of control. To me, he's reached a crossroads in both his career and his life. Will he sort himself out or end up another player who could have achieves so much more?

At the moment, it looks like the latter.

Only two men could save Rooney's career right now and thats Gus Poyet or Jose Mourinho. As we can't afford Rooney's wage demands that for me means a change of scenery to Madrid.
Like a few others have said before, really don't think Rooney was happy in his private life to be shagging hookers when your childhood sweetheart is pregnant with your first baby, just doesn't add up or is it really that thick? Plus throw in the drinking and the smoking and maybe he just wants to self-destruct.
So maybe sometime abroad and ditching the missus will do him good. Before the road to footballing genius is too hard to get back on!
Beckham survived in Madrid so I'm sure Rooney can. Unfortunately I can see him wearing the blue of City, IMHO don't think Rooney really needs Manchester or England as a place to live right now.
