And in the meantime, England should push Gerrard up behind the main striker, and play Carrick as a holding midfielder. It's what everyone has been wanting for ages.

My point is you play both. Carrick & Lampard in midfield, Gerrard playing behind the forward up-front (Owen if fit)

I'm not getting my hopes up again, we always seem to have shit like this happen to us. Of the 22 players on the pitch yesterday, it has to be the one most important to our World Cup chances who picks up an injury. There must be a curse against England winning any major tournament.

It is not a curse we are not good enough however we do have a better squad this time.

All depends on Rooney fitness now.

Apparently Beckham took 7 and a half weeks to "recover" from his metatarsal injury in 2002, but even then he didn't look fully fit when he played.

Rooney only has 6 weeks, and he's already broken a bone in the same foot 2 years ago. Not just that, but even if he did make a miraculous recovery he'd come in with no match practice and our team gameplan would be incomplete while Sven waits and sees.

Is it me or are these metatarsal injuries more regular now? I think it must be to do with the boots and the new studs that they wear. The new boots are as thin as anything.

Oh and the balls are lighter, the players are soft and there is not enough physical contact...
