Unless he’s changed since he was In Italy we are in for some goals, at both ends of the pitch. Doesn’t sound like he cares much for defending :)

Hopefully, with all those Brighton games he has been watching, he has worked out why our defensive is pretty good and will keep it that way. TB is definitely looking for a tiny bit of evolution rather than revolution.

He has two underlings whom should know quite a bit about defending/

Paolo Bianco (skills coach)

Born August 20, 1977 in Foggia (Italy).

He played as a defender for Foggia, Treviso, Catania, Cagliari, Atalanta and Sassuolo. Paolo finished his playing career in 2015. He began his coaching career as an assistant coach at Sassuolo U19. Later he coached Syracuse and Sicula Leonzio, and in 2019 he joined Roberto De Zerbi at Sassuolo as a skills coach.

Salvatore Monaco (skills coach)

Born December 28, 1972 in Torre Annuziata (Italy).

Formerly an Italian footballer who played as a centre-back. During his career, Salvatore played for Catania, Salernitana, Foggia, Perugia, Ternana, Fano, Trento and Catanzaro.

I do wonder if all this briefing to the press about him being close to joining us is just an attempt to get Juventus to move for him.

Or he knows the Juve thing is a non runner at this stage but using it to make his case for the Albion.

Existing times.

We just need WAG details and handshake technique confirmed and “Here we go”

As a fan of spoonerisms, I very much look forward to him being in the dugout for the Palace games

(Apologies if fixtures, I've not read the whole thread :))

I’d say he has been very successful bearing in mind what teams he has been at and what they’ve achieved.
He lasted 13 games at Palermo before being fired ! He got Benevento relegated and got destroyed in the champions League with Donetsk after spending 60m+ on the team.

Sassoulo and Foggia are the outliers. Where he did very well. Bear in mind that Foggia were a non league club when he was manager.

It would be an interesting appointment but he's not perfect by any stretch.

Benevento are a club with absolutely no Serie A pedigree. He was also very young for a manager and had mostly no league experience. At Shakhtar he won the cup and left the club top of the league. Regarding the champions league- 60 million buys you most of Cucu and not much else, he was hardly going to win it. I'll take the fact that the Italian media seem to be suggesting Juve would want him and the last five years of his career as testament to his potential.

Is spending £60M and getting destroyed in the champions league that big a deal ? We regularly spent over £60M in a season to finish 17th in the premier league

My thoughts precisely.

I suspect, not that the club (Albion) will be overly impressed, that by getting this ‘news’ out into the public domain he’s testing the old lady’s resolve. As it were.

It might backfire horribly for him though - he could end up with neither.

I’m probably wrong, but this all feels a bit Watford to me :/

However if he’s our man, then I accept the due diligence will have been top drawer. Hopefully he’ll turn out to be a brilliant appointment :)

now I am worried, add all that with the fact if Juventus come calling in mid season he would be off like a shot.

Look at the Palermo managerial history and tell me it is possible to have success there. 13 games is quite impressive actually.

Benevento.. you have to know things about Benevento to know about his results there. They had gone from Serie C to Serie A in two seasons, had a very small budget, started their Serie A season losing 9 out of 9 games (while scoring 2 goals and conceding 22) before De Zerbi took over. At first they kept losing - they lost 14 out of their 14 last games which is, I think, the all time record in any big 5 league - but after he had been in charge for a while there was a pretty good upturn. After only getting 1 point in their first 18 games - 9 of them with De Zerbi in charge of what was essentially a Serie B team with no confidence - they managed to perform like a mid-table team in the spring and ended up with 21 points, which is horrible but given the circumstances not so shite. This is why Sassuolo decided to hire him immediately after the season.

Yeah, Shakhtars results in CL last season were not great but their league season was a lot better than the year before him... Lets worry about how Brighton will perform in the CL some other day.

Not sure he got destroyed in the Champions League. There was a 5-0 v Real Madrid and a 2-0 v AC Milan but other than that they seemed to hold their own pretty well.
His term at Sassuolo was impressive getting them to top half finishes two years running.
There is obviously risk involved but we seem to be overlooking some poor runs ourselves over the past two years, especially at home.
He does play a fairly risky brand of football but it is possession based and so hopefully shouldn’t be too far from our existing style.
We have a strong group of experienced players too which will obviously help in any transition. Lallana and Welbeck will be important in this.
Personally would prefer him to many other potential options.
It seems like Knutsen has opted to stay at Bodo/Glimt. He maybe one we keep our eye on over the next 2/3 years.

Yep don't get me wrong. Still very exciting. Would be fun to have him, at least he has a personality unlike potty boy.

football hipsters and Italian fans love him.

You cannot read anything into how long he lasted at Palermo, they were an absolute basket case, the way they went through managers at the time makes Watford look like a long term employment prospect. The guy who replaced De Zerbi lasted 7 games and the guy after that 10. They ended up with 5 head coaches that season.
