Just found out that Louisa Mark died a couple of weeks ago.

It's a name that will mean nothing to most of you. Even the older generation of NSCers will be unaware of her - unless you were into reggae in the late 70s (and I think that's just 1066 Familyman and me on NSC) but she was a big name in lovers rock.

It's not my favourite genre but Caught You in a Lie is still a great song and she died at 49, no age at all.

I'm now going to spend the next hour listening to her finest moments and wallowing in nostalgia.

Do you remember a Regggae band called 'Fantation' I think.? Played the circuit around the late 70s.

I don't recall any band called Fantation and I spent far too much time in the late 70s hanging round reggae shops/clubs and listening to reggae radio shows. Perhaps they were a local band - is this round the Brighton area?

I saw a few reggae bands in 76 and 77 - don't recall seeing any down the Years, that was more of a rock venue. Reggae bands used to play the Alhambra or the reggae club on West St (can't remember exactly where now).

Thanks for this post. First I'm hearing of this news.

Bet it won't be very long into your listening back before you reach for this classic.

Ah the Alhambra...we kept that place alive for a long time.. we being KingTafariLove soundsystem for you crinkleys...

Wow, you're connected with KingTafariLove soundsystem !

I used to love listening to you lot at the top rank suite on them Monday nights when the big reggae supes were in town. I used to position myself just behind your control tower and watch and try to learn, so I could have a go myself back at home in my bedroom

I seem to remember you only having one deck, just like Shaka, as your DJ's would always have lyrics a plenty to keep the dance rocking as you flipped it over for the dub or reached for another killer roots tune. It's all a long time ago, but didn't you used to get specials from the visiting artists too ?

I remember once going to a little basement place opposite the pavilion for a three way sound clash you were in. You had a couple of youth sounds there and for me you buried them as the youth sounds both had a sticky finger on their sound effects machine and would haul & pull up everything without ever letting a tune play

Was the Alhambra another basement place on West street ?, as that was the only other place I saw you play apart from the top rank suite and the place opposite the pavilion. We used to come over form Hastings and the Alhambra doesn't ring a bell.

Thanks for the kind words. I was known as daddy dave. Founding member with Marcus. Marcus was manager, Silva selecting and singing, Brother Culture and Mikey Trooper mcing... 20 odd years of niceness  yeah we had some nice specials, Dennis Brown, Willie Williams...
Think the place in west street was Queen Anne.. Hard to remember now haha...
Funnily enough, I remember the mouthy little prat on the mic in the mini clash opposite pavilion.
Nobody beat us in clash, apart from our first ever one with Tubbys, an they brought speakers that covered a whole wall in the hall we played in...we did a few clash..I remember a nice one in Oxford, and we did a couple in some hotel on seafront, but mostly, a lot of standalone dance and blues parties in London and Brighton.
Top Rank was cool. Always nice to meet the stars innit haha
Thinking about it, we did a few dance in Hastings and Eastbourne as well..
Was a reunion dance recently in hove at greenhouse effect? Sadly, couldnt get home...

btw, alhambra was demolished to make way for Thistle hotel

I remember her having a fight in the street, Goldhawk Rd, circa 1983. She won!
Used to live around St Stephens Ave, Shepherd´s Bush.
Voice of an angel, right hook of a heavyweight!

Nice to listen to hear vinyl as it should be (even though its been digitised when listening via the web ) , pops and crackles , none of this modern cd shit which has been cleaned up to remove imperfections.

I remember KingTafariLove too - I have great memories of the Alhambra.

And thanks for the reminder about Queen Anne - that was the place I was thinking about

Goldhawk Rd ?

Home of Greensleeves records no less

Anyone know if their record shop is still there ? I only visited it once or twice and that was back in the 80's.

Mind you, some of the 7" 's that came out of Jamaica were on some pretty poor pressings it has to be said.

I think it's me who should be saying thanks because your sound leaves me with some lovely memories. For the south coast you were a top sound and I can well believe that you could easily hold your own in London. Did you ever clash with Tubby's at their place under the arches at Vauxhall ?

For some reason I have no recollection of ever seeing you in Hastings, although that's not to say I didn't as I can't remember everything from them days. I'm guessing you might have played at The Crypt or above the Carlisle then ? I knew a few people in Hastings who had a little sound going around that time but nothing to compare to yours. I can't even remember the name of it now off the top of my head, although all this is a long time ago now. Amazing how time flies.

It's great to see you pop up on here because I've done a few internet searches for your sound before, curious to see what happened to the sound, but always drawn a blank. So who's got all the old specials and the sounds collection now then ?

After an interesting chat with some bloke on the internet, I believe a bunch of dubs that disappeared are being played by a quite a big sound called tafarilove in Texas, USA. never heard from the guy over the net after he realised I was from the Brighton Tafarilove haha.
Somebody mentioned on a forum that they were at one of their dance and was asking why the dubs they play mention places in the uk haha.

I left to live in Europe in the mid 90s, then Levi (troopers brother) who physically built the sound and was engineer passed away. Hit everybody pretty hard, and seemed to fade after that...
Silva is trying to find some tapes he think he has, so hopefully one day..you would think we had hundreds of recordings....we did...but..you know how it is with tapes..im uploading a nice 12 tribes dance with Bro Culture on jahrevelationmuzik, ill post it here later...its the only thing ive got that sounds anything like one of our dance... and back in the day, culture was a top uk mc, and he is kicking on this dance...its in Brixton town hall in 86

Brother Culture still mcing, stayed at my place when he was playing in Prague, and Brno in Czeck Rep, think he was in Brighton recently.. Silva still recording and making specials for some pretty big sounds. Heard him on a mix from Supersonic out of Berlin, recently, who are one of the major European sounds.

Trooper still working and has radio show on vibesfm in London.

Great thread, I don't remember much of the 'scene' you're talking about, but went to the Alhambra several times as a teenager to see new wave bands, real spit and sawdust venue -with a heart- I remember.

Thanks for the update and the links. I'll check those links out. Sorry to hear about your engineer.

Funnily enough I added Vibes FM as a bookmark quite recently with the intention of getting right into it as I was trying to find out about a couple of their DJ's I used to like listening to when in London. They were Dizzy D the cabbage man and Lady G ( not that Lady G ) as I used to love their revive shows. Haven't found them on there though but I did notice mctrooper.

Thanks so much for this little trip down memory lane. It's made my day finding out all about your sound again
