Jesus... awful, awful news. I grew up watching Bottom and that (Gas) episode is still the best 30 mins of pure comic genius I have ever, ever seen. I was crying from the cold cups of tea until the "I thought I'd burn it off..." "what? your face!" gag... utter, utter genius. I'm very, very sad right now.

Thanks Rik, for making my teenage years all the better with your fantastic bottom.

RIP indeed.

Kosh

"Sorry about everything being a bit of a bummer, you know, what with you dying and all. Still, things could've been worse; You could've been me, and ended-up having a really bad time all the time", signed, "Neil"

Grew up on watching Bottom, my younger brother brought me the DVD set last christmas, always liked the things he did, never seemed to take life to seriously.

Pretty scary really, same age as my Dad.

Will be very sadly missed.
His role as one half of Dreamytime Escorts in Mr Jolly Lives Next Door was genius !

A celeb death that has genuinely shocked me. I had the pleasure of meeting him in Hamley's toyshop when I worked there in the 90s and he was one of the nicest and most down to earth of all the celebrities that came in over time. And there were many who came in. He asked me if all the staff played with the toys when the shop closed at night. Polite and gave his time to all the public who stopped him for an autograph. RIP.

I was late to the show with Rik - i borrowed a video of Bottom Live 3: Hooligans Island from a mate when I was about 13 or 14 and it was the funniest thing i'd ever seen - the slapstick, the rudeness and the terrific ad-libbing throughout. Then I got into Bottom, The Young Ones, Blackadder et al. Each and every thing he was in he made it better. I agree with one poster in that he seemed to be genuinely mental - such a brilliant comic mind and like a child in a man suit.

It's a really sad day. I don't usually suffer from sadness when celebs pass on but this one is really sad. RIP Rik. A real loss to TV and comedy.

I grew up with The Young Ones. Like many I can still recite large chunks of the dialogue from this show with ease. I also saw him perform at The Dome with Ben Elton and got to meet him afterwards....and he autographed my jeans for some reason that I cannot recall.

RIP.

This is terrible news :( Absolutely brilliant comic, the Young Ones and his scenes as Lord Flash-heart still crack me up no matter how many times I watch them.

RIP The People's Poet

RIP Rik, he was a truly great comedy actor.

I'm still in shock, 56 is no age.

Me too. Can't remember being so sad at a celeb passing. My bruvs, mates and myself used to use his lines all the time. And they were funny every time.
