Right this Town/City thing once and for all

its about the desperate need to refer to where you live as something more important than it actually is. its like the worst insane excesses of tony wilson when he used to convince himself and attempt to others, that manchester was some sort of global city on a par with london or new york. thats how the city referencers on here sound to me. thats all.
That reminds me of the argument between folk in Birmingham and Manchester about which place is England's "Second City".

Brummies claim it is Birmingham. Mancunians say it is London.

What about "Saltdean", though? How does that work? There is the bit that is part of Telscombe and the bit that is part of Brighton and Hove.

Mind you ... as a former resident of Telscombe Village, I find it totally offensive that Telscombe Cliffs gets away these days with calling itself "Telscombe".

west saltdean is brighton and hove and east saltdean is lewes. the spanish is on the lewes side of the road. its a bit like ledra street nicosia.

indeed telscombe cliffs and telscombe are totally different. telscombe cliffs is just peacehaven really. walking from the top of longridge avenue in saltdean to telscombe village is my favourite walk ever.

Julie Burchill makes some interesting points about why Brighton is not a city in her book Made in Brighton.

A concise summing up of the said points please.

She asks how many cities can you walk across in half an hour, in how many cities does half the working population leave for another city, and does a city have the lowest wages in the area (Brighton's wages are lower than Crawley's apparently). She also asks how can you have a city called Brighton AND Hove...suggesting one cannot live in Brighton AND Hove at the same time.

no one says it about anywhere it was a joke.

but you would not say i have just been in the city there was nowhere to park etc etc.

But Brighton had been performing the function of a regional city for some time before it got the legal right to refer to itslef as such.

I would turn the question on it's head, because imo the real issue is why some people feel the need to downgrade it's status.

well its debatable that a town 45 minutes from the EUs largest city plays some pivotal regional role in any major sense. apart from it being where they go for a day out.

the town doesnt have feelings its ok you can be honest about it. its not downgrading its status its just being a bit less f***ing deluded, in myopinion.

I live in Lincoln now, have lived outside Leicester before that, and gone into loads of cities in my life, but if one of my mates says "wanna go into town?" be it around Brighton, Lincoln, Leicester or any other city, I'll just assume they mean that. Town is just the word for me, nobody says "alright mate, fancy a night out in the city?" it's "Alright mate, were going out in town, coming?".

The City of St David's - population 1,797 - smaller than Rottingdean.

Well I cant walk across the city in half an hour, but assuming she's only referring to the centre, then yes there are plenty of cities you can walk acroos the city centre in 30 mins
I'd love to see the figures that prove half the city commutes to London. Remember Ms Birchill people work in other areas than the medja.

seriously??

IMHO Julie Burchill is vastly overrated and has a damn sight more in common with her icon Jordan, literary-wise, than she thinks she has. Shallow word-play, big on middle-England shock value, low on IQ. In short, Not All That. Parsons is by far the better writer. Having said that, my copy of 'the Boy Looked At Johnny' signed by the pair of them in their NME kinder-bunker days is a much-treasured possession.

It all comes down to history. I used to live in the City of Montalcino (population about 2,500). Some of the locals were fairly pissed off about the place being called a mere "city", when once upon a time it had been the Republic of Montalcino. The best known book about the place is written by an Australian, who calls it a village. But what does she know?
