I've never seen a thread on NSC with so many people in agreement!

Well to redress the balance then - I can't stand the bloke. Completely and utterly unfunny. And if anyone in the world has a "smug git" face you instantly want to slap, it's him.

This country loves a good storm in a teacup.

We have no problem putting world poverty, war and famine to the back of our minds whilst we tackle the more pressing outrage of someone posting a picture of a mong face on twitter.

It's window licker-gate all over again.

You don't really get irony do you ? Gevais is hillarious party because he's so over the top. He thinks nothing of calling his audience cnuts because they get it.

Well actually, you don't do you ? That's why unlike most here you don't find him amusing.

Are you lecturing people on what they should find funny and what they shouldn't?

I get what Gervais is trying to do, and I don't particularly find him funny - or don't you 'get' that sort of irony?

FWIW - I am also struggling to see what the problem is with his Twitter thing.

I like a lot of RG's stuff - but it's no surprise he gets into trouble occasionally. I mean, that's par for the course, isn't it? You drive for a living, you occasionally get done for speeding. You're a comedian who gets laughs from being offensive, you get caught up in a media storm from time to time.

I'm not that bothered, but I don't buy this idea that the term 'mong' has nothing to do with Down's Syndrome. Of course it does, that is where it derives from. Has the language changed that much to mean something completely different? Not sure about that, either.

McIntyre, Brydon,Evans, O'Gurgle.....etc etc.

McIntyre and Brydon are unknown outside of our island. Evans is good at what he does, but when it all comes down to it, he's a slapstick mime artist, and I've never even heard of O'Gurgle.

The Office has been copied/shown in most developed countries across the globe.

I'm not saying people have to like it, but to deny its impact is ludicrous.

For example, I can't stand U2, but for me to just come along and say 'they're shit' would be wrong, I just have to acknowledge they're not my cup of tea.

You miss the point, Gervais mocks himself that's his point, he's not in the least bit smug. His humour is marmite yes but most people see what he's up to. Frankly I don't see how you say you get his humour but still find him unfunny, prefer Bernard Manning would you ?

And just for the record, I will add that I did find his 'mong' bit in his standup routine unfunny, and not because its massively offensive, it just didn't make me laugh. I'm simply suggesting it doesn't deserve this kind of backlash.

I wish he'd just go back to bashing Christians, and then we can all be happy.

Does he ?

I like Gervais. I've seen him a couple of times live, and think The Office is one of the finest British comedies of all time. But self-mocking ? Maybe in The Office where he obviously (and brilliantly) plays a complete arsehole, but as a stand-up comic he's certainly not one of the self-mocking, self-deprecating type.

I thought it was pretty obvious that much of his stand-up is done tongue-in-cheek
