This is not funny, if Frankie Dettori, Ryan Moore, Johnny Murtugh and the like follow suit it will cost racing and the bookies millions. Im glad someone has made a stand against this namby pamby f***ing do gooders who just want to ruin everything. Cant whip horses, cant tackle in football, ban foxhunting etc etc etc.....God im pissed off with this.

Without knowing the whole story was the new whip rules an idea championed by the racing for change committee?

You're pro fox hunting?

Having been bought in the country and having my late father own a farm yes I bloody am....and unless people have a countryside background, they dont know what the f*** they are talking about....They are not cuddely nice little animals, they are compulsive killing machines that can cause thousands of pounds worth of damage in a single evening.

Shoot them then? You've got guns in the country haven't you? Chasing them with packs of dogs whilst on horseback surely isn't the easiest/most humane way?

Shooting them is harder than calling 10 of your mates, getting them to bring their horses along, don a fancy red coat and grab a bugle? And what do they do that's so bad? Eat some chickens? Build a better hutch. Anyway, I don't like this online slagging competition stuff, can we agree to disagree and leave it there?

Getting back to the main subject of the thread, good on Richard, how many sports people would make a stand such as this?

We will have to, you cant argue with someone about the countryside who thinks Chicken live in a hutch....But I assume you know how much a leg of lamb is in the local supermarket, about £15 ish ?and that's just one leg....They will kill a lamb, then kill again, then again, never for food or hunger just for the sheer hell of it. Your right, this convo is best left alone, unless you know what your talking about and seen it.

Maybe I'm being naive, but if you have to whip a horse to get it going doesn't that say something about the abilities of the rider/quality of training?

We have hands and heels races here also for apprentices. They do carry a whip though. Horses do not run in straight lines and the whip (which is air cushioned btw) is 100% essential for safety reasons. The argument is whether it should be used for corrective purposes only or for coercive purposes and then how many times should the jock be allowed to administer a crack. My belief is that Hughes has thrown his toys tbh, all very well taking a stand but they announced a review today anyway and the rule has only been in effect since Monday!

I think this is excessive. I understand his frustration, I've a lot of time for Richard Hughes as a jockey having followed the sport for the last couple of years, and I would imagine that if you looked at the stats for average number of uses of the whip, he would be fairly low or middle of the pack anyway. The new rules are very extreme and they were always going to cause problems, but to quit because you've broken a rule you don't agree with and are subsequently banned from a big meeting for, is daft. Put simply!

I would like to hear what other jockeys think of the new rules though, now that most of them have had chance to get used to them in racing terms. I would especially want to hear from De Souza and Hanagan, I think their opinion should be well respected.
