I remember them playing in a small club (The I-Beam) in San Francisco when I lived there - but I gave it a miss that night unfortunately.
They did come out with some reasonable sounds, but never interesting enough imho.

Michael Stipe tells a great story about a game he and his mates used to play at showbiz parties. It was called 'Knob Touch', and involved scoring points by touching other party guests with their nadgers, obviously covertly, whilst in conversation. Can't see it catching on over here

That's an interesting and popular view among many who once loved or admired them, and one I have some sympathy for. To me they were never quite the same after Bill Berry left but they have made some excellent songs, if not albums since, and provided some amazing live moments up 'til the end. I remember hearing Sitting Still for the first time live on the last gig I saw them play at The Rose Bowl in Southampton and Maps and Legends in Hyde Park. Wouldn't have missed either for the world.
