So you're willing to accept someone's blind faith in God but you are not willing to accept someone's blind faith that there definitely isn't a God? That's kinda dumb.

Where did I say that? Once again making things up as you go along :)

I'm not willing to accept anyone's blind faith.

Absolute rubbish...which evidence are you referring to? many religious people believe in evolution as well ...

Excellent. In which case If a religious person from say the Christian faith believes in evolution, then we can disregard the stories told in the scriptures about the planet being built in 6 days and is no more than 12000 years old .The creation of Adam and Eve, and the whole rib gate affair. All of which go against the now recognised path of our existence, which is evolution.

So on this basis alone, the credibility of the bible plummets.

And of course , these things were believed absolute by Christians not so long ago. Until that is, that science proved this as complete nonsense.
It is wrong to suggest that, as science has not yet got to the bottom of how the universe came about, but accept evolution and other scientific findings, to then say that it was god, just to fill in the current blanks.

It's an allegory!

God creating Adam then using a rib to create Eve is basically the same as saying that within the primordial soup of Earth 3.8 billion years ago, that God, the creator, ensured that conditions were right for the first prokaryotic cells to emerge. Once he got that started, it was just a case of waiting 3.7998 billion years later for Adam to appear, in Africa (his name might not have been Adam). True story.

And on that basis, the concepts of original sin and vicarious salvation go for a burton as well, which kind of negates the need for any ‘dying for our sins’ futile grand gesture.

Load of old gash pie innit.

If atheists are correct, we are no more important than plants and snails. here for a moment in time, to exist, reproduce and die. That's quite depressing really, I was hoping for something more, than that are clever brains were just designed for this.

That's exactly why we are here from an evolutionary perspective. Gene mutations make all animals and plants what they are. People love to make things up to make themselves feel better about the time they spend on Earth. Just enjoy your stay and make the most of it. I would advise anyone against any religion. You will be dust when you die. That isn't depressing if you can get it in perspective, it's just reality. If you do not have the mental strength to accept it, then by all means sign up to one of the 3,800 religious groups that exist. That doesn't make you a bad person, just misguided with all the facts that you have at your disposal.

Forgive me if I'm wrong but you seem to have made up your mind that people who follow a religion have done so because they can't handle the thought of mortality and are mentally weak.

If that is the case, why do you come to that assumption?

Why is it depressing? I never get my head around that? The world is a wonderful beautiful place, life can be fulfilled in rich, rewarding, creative ways. The joy of falling in love, having children, or just living. There really isn't anything depressing about it unless your fear of not being here is so great that you need the comfort of imagining something beyond - like here isn't good enough.

That is a more depressing thought to me. That our lives are somehow preparation for something beyond. Like this isn't good enough, its all about whats next. Even more depressing is thought of being judged by some omnipotent creator that can give children dreadful diseases or allow so much suffering.

No, I'll stick with the plants and the snails thanks, enjoy what I have while I can.

But blissfully happy, going about our business.
You don't see cows ganging up on each other, they share the whole field, whatever colour they are.

Of course they do. :D As someone who actually works with cattle I can only assume that you have never actually spent any time on either a beef or dairy farm.

But here's a bit of black on white cow porn to settle down with whilst you ruminate on this post.

Enjoy.

It is equally depressing that we see ourselves and our 'progress' as more so much more important that plants and snails. Perhaps if we were a little more humble and respectful about our relationship with the rest of the planet we wouldn't be ****ing it up so spectacularly.

for the record I don't see religion as the main driver in our arrogance.

Just because they got the detail wrong doesn't mean the concept is wrong.

Fair enough, a few butts but no guns or knives to be seen.
Bet it's over in a few mins.

I don't think that it's depressing at all, we are no more important than any other species and the sooner you get used to the idea the better.
Our brains were not designed, they evolved and so did our delusions of self importance.
As far as evolutionary time is concerned we are here for a moment, unless you have have discovered how to live forever!
Even the earth won't exist forever, only time will.
The only depressing thing, is how we are using this moment in time.

I don't follow a religion but if you just look at the content of this thread and all others on related subjects, one thing comes clearly to mind.

One side conducts themselves well (the majority of which have been chased away in previous threads) and most of the other side hurl abuse and insults.

If this is an example of how humans interact, what would our lives be like now (if there were any) if there hadn't been religions?

Everything involving science, common sense and logic point towards a lack of existence of any god. It is not up to anyone but yourself to decide which way to go but to a man, every logical thinking person gets frustrated with people claiming god exists. I wouldn't take any insults too personally. I would wager that just about all of them are born out of extreme frustration. I would just urge you to look at man made (too many to list) & natural disasters (top ten listed) that are either occurring at the moment or historically and ask yourself why, if there is a god is he not stopping them and why has he not stopped them in the past. Look at these disasters and then tell me why he has sat and watched.

1,000,000–4,000,000 dead. 1931 China floods China July, August, 1931
900,000–2,000,000 1887 Yellow River flood China September, October, 1887
830,000 1556 Shaanxi earthquake China January 23, 1556
450,000 (242,000–655,000) 1976 Tangshan earthquake China July 28, 1976
375,000 (250,000–500,000)[1] 1970 Bhola cyclone East Pakistan (now Bangladesh) November 13, 1970
300,000[4] 1839 India cyclone India November 25, 1839
300,000[5] 1737 Calcutta cyclone India October 7, 1737
280,000 2004 Indian Ocean earthquake and tsunami Indian Ocean December 26, 2004
273,400[6] 1920 Haiyuan earthquake China December 16, 1920
250,000–300,000[7] 526 Antioch earthquake Byzantine Empire (now Turkey) May 526

Please don't be selective with your response. Give a straight answer why "god" would not stop these.

As for religion being the owner of morality, well that's just the definition of irony.
