Why is it acceptable to be used by black people? As they reclaimed the word that was used to oppress them, divesting it of its meaning and power.
Exactly, and this made sense for a fair while.

Then white people were not allowed to use it. I often wonder if this is because it is part of black culture that we cannot appropriate (why not other parts) or because when white people use it it reverts to its original meaning, sure this means that it has now regained its original meaning an power?

At the risk of going off at a tangent can I ask a simple question? The N is quite rightly considered abhorrent in most contexts. However, in rap music it's incredibly prevalent and seemingly accepted.

Among African Americans it's a term of familiarity and endearment as long as it's used by another African American. It just is.

My grandmother didn't know any other word other than "colored" in South St Louis USA.

An inevitable update from this story:
He’s gone full Chris Williamson / David Millar
His tweet yesterday is blaming mysterious forces (aka Jews) for the career meltdown 🤭

Seems to be quite a broadly used word. Some black people seem to use it as a term of endearment, “My N…” etc

Other black people I’ve seen on stand up specials etc seem to use it as an insult, “I’d never date a N…..”

Or famously, Chris Rock ;

“There’s black people and then there’s N’s”

Weirdly tends to make sense in the context.

As we are all aware, there is no context that a white person should say it.

A Jewish guy goes to see his mate and tells him, "You're not going to believe this, my son has left home and become a Christian!" his mate says "no way! You are not going to believe this, my son has also left home and
become a Christian, let's go see the Rabbi.
They go to the Rabbi and tell him, the Rabbi says, "You're not going to believe this, but my son has also left home and become a Christian, we should pray to God"
So they start praying, and the voice of God speaks and says, "You're not going to believe this....

I'm not sure I see your point. If you're white, don't say it. It's a simple system.

He already had a meltdown and career break 3 or 4 years ago... we went to one of his comeback shows here in the west country, he threw that word around liberally to a mostly 'blue collar' audience. He was dog-shiite, he didn't have a plan, was assuming he could just wing it with controversy, clearly trying to get bites by using the N word.

The audience started at 250 sold out, at the halfway point I think 50 had left... he is clearly a guy with issues.

So you take Jimmy Carr at face value? I always found that one of the draws of Jimmy is he walks the line between saying the unsayable and having brilliant comedic craft (you can also add in this that he is usually using himself as the punchline so doesn't tend to have that punch down tone).

As I said, for me, without the offensive side that joke is pretty average.

If you don't care about the joke being offensive, why did you post it in the middle of this conversation?
Jimmy Carr can be very funny and also very unfunny.

I think he’s gone off the boil these last few years.

I saw him live years ago, back before the liquorice hair days and he was superb.
