So who never saw the original series but watched yesterday's?
I'd be interested in what they think!

If people stopped trying to compare it to the original series, the context of their watching will be different and more open and they may enjoy it.

i liked it, laughed quite a lot. liked the feeling its Gary of Men Behaving Badly 10 years on (notable gag about the women bleeding for 5 days), liked the setting of the male grooming industry with its inane pointless products, liked the modern take on train annoyances, being emailed/text away from work, fat people and other little things. in the end i thought it stood up in it own right.

i didnt get where i am today dismissing a series by comparing to a 30 year old version.

Certainly better than reality TV and cheap games shows.

I tried to keep an open mind, but I just couldn't get over the audience laughter.

Much to my surprise, I enjoyed it. Laughed like a drain.

The original was great but this looks like it won't be half bad. Office life has changed in many ways over 30 years (contrast the company doctor in the original with the "wellness co-ordinator" in the new version) and I thought this took the piss effectively out of the new world. Also the tone is a bit more jaundiced than the original which always had to pull back slightly from real misanthropy. 7/10 (blimey, I sound like a reviewer on the Late Show)

Agree with all of that. Quite enjoyed it, myself.

It's not a remake, it's a new series on a mid-life crisis set in a modern office with some references to the original.

I'll give it another watch.

I could not bring myself to watch it as the original Perrin is a defining moment in TV history for me. What next a remake of Fawlty Towers with John Barrowman playing Basil Fawlty ?.

Agreed...I watched it with a grimace. Leonard Rossiter was a comic genius and these " remakes " are cheap and pale imitations.
Some programmes just can't be reproduced....why don't they just show the originals again ?

Some people are so attached to the view that "there should never be 'remakes' of comedy classics" that they will choose being attached to that fixed position over actually enjoying a TV programme about the here and now.

It wasn't that bad, give it a few weeks. Needs to lose the canned laughter track though, no program should have that in the background

It would have made far more sense to repeat the original.

Few sitcoms are in the least bit funny, many plain embarrassing.
Watching exerts I found I was chuckling along with some of this new Reggie.

However - the old RP played by Len Rossiter was shown and I found that funny too - so really it begs the question "why not just play repeats of the original?".

I didn't get to where I am today without seeing a program get better.

This was actually quite funny this week.

To me, the original was one of the top 5 sit-coms ever, but this version is funny and better than any other current sitcom (eg My Family !!)

Given the unbelieveably low standard of rival shit-coms I suppose it holds its own, however, remakes usually fail to deliver due to the fact that at certain time with a certain cast a sit-com works.

I was very dissapointed with Mel Gibsons 2004 remake of The Life Of Brian.. very few laughs at all
