Well, we knew it was going to be bad, but.. this bad ?
Clunes seems to be sleepwalking through his role and has managed to totaly lose the original Reggies irascibility, sarcasm and rebellion. The script is poor as is the entire concept..

I pity the "Studio Audience", word has it it was played "before" a live audience and that the laughter was not canned or forced. I can only assume that the audience had several machine guns pointing at them or that they had been told if they underperform they would then end up as the audience to The life Of Riley.... either way I think they ceased to be a live audience and I envy them.... better to die on your feet than to live on your knees..

" goodbye Reggie"

er, rather the point of the character isnt it? i'd say that mean its spot on. loses the original sarcasm and rebellion? those character traits are supposed to develop, some rose tinted glases of the oringal methinks.

i liked it, laughed quite a lot. liked the feeling its Gary of Men Behaving Badly 10 years on (notable gag about the women bleeding for 5 days), liked the setting of the male grooming industry with its inane pointless products, liked the modern take on train annoyances, being emailed/text away from work, fat people and other little things. in the end i thought it stood up in it own right.

i didnt get where i am today dismissing a series by comparing to a 30 year old version.

What a sad day for the BBC.

You must have been one of the chimps in the audience then ? It seems that the BBC's dumbing down has sunk to your level of compatability. I'm sat in watching this rubbish because I'm an old git and my evening drinkies have taken their toll. 20 years ago I would be still enjoying myself down the pub not stuck in watching this dross. Its damned unfortunate I have work in the morning because I could have missed this Grot

I thought it was truly awful. I thought it might have some spark but it was a pale shadow of the original ... what a sad waste of talent.

why did you and others prejudging it even bother to watch it? seems too much nostalgia, i wonder if you you'd think of the orginal if you viewed it for the first time today?

classic comedy? no/see where it goes. enjoyable? yes.

Agreed. It is a 'different' take on the same idea. Lets see how it develops as Clunes loses the plot. Will he open a simular shop like 'Grot' I wonder??? What will it sell. I watched a few of the old series recently and it is funny in parts and flat in others.

Certainly better than reality TV and cheap games shows.

I absolutely loved the original three series.
I was also shocked and disappointed that it was going to be remade.

However, today's episode wasn't terrible. I'm prepared to watch another one and see how it goes. Am suspending judgement for the time being.

I tried to keep an open mind, but I just couldn't get over the audience laughter.
That ruined it for me more than anything else.

It wasn't great but I was pleased that it was very up to date, as Beo says, although I doubt I will be religously watching it.

I could not bring myself to watch it as the original Perrin is a defining moment in TV history for me. What next a remake of Fawlty Towers with John Barrowman playing Basil Fawlty ?.

Much to my surprise, I enjoyed it. Laughed like a drain.

The original was great but this looks like it won't be half bad. Office life has changed in many ways over 30 years (contrast the company doctor in the original with the "wellness co-ordinator" in the new version) and I thought this took the piss effectively out of the new world. Also the tone is a bit more jaundiced than the original which always had to pull back slightly from real misanthropy. 7/10 (blimey, I sound like a reviewer on the Late Show)
