Recommend a decent Sunday lunch in a nice country pub near Brighton

The food there is not very good. The pub is up for sale.

I took the family and grandchildren etc 25 of us to The Forresters at Scaynes Hill in November, the food and service was excellant that day buit have not tried it since. It was not the cheapest but certainly not the most expensive but all round VFM.

I've always enjoyed The Dolphin in HH. Not exclusive or quiet by any means, but the food is good.

The Cricketers, Berwick I think, near the church. Excellent blue cheese garlic bread. I could eat it all day. This was about 3 years ago mind. It might have changed.

Frau Tubthumperin took me there on one of our first dates.

I agree with the people who have said Jolly Sportsman, although I do think its slightly over priced.
The Greyhound in Keymers also good, the resturant always seems busy so they must be doing something right.

b ii) ..... of a weekend
c) have a wander about Alfriston with her
d) eat at the George
e) Wand her

Superphil is right, with the Sportsman in Amberley.
Possibly the best view, even by Sussex standards, across the river flood plain.

Last time we were there we settled down and a bird of prey came and hoovered over our table.
Unnerving but very cool.

I expect there are quite a few Yew Trees, but there is a good one at Chalvington. Very old pub, stone floors, great beer, good food. Has the added benefit of it's own cricket pitch and set in a lovely location just north of the downs.

Head along the A27 past Lewes and Glynde then left towards Ripe and you're nearly there. No more than 10 minutes past Lewes.

There is a Yew Tree at Chalvington (or between Chalvington and Golden Cross, to be precise) and a Yew Tree at Arlington.

Both are excellent. Personally, I prefer the Chalvington one, because I like poky pubs where you can bang your head on the beams.

The Thatch Inn Hassocks.

You must have been unlucky when you went then. I have eaten there several times and always good.
It is always packed and you have to book for Sunday lunch. I went there last Tuesday (lunch time) without booking and it was full, I could not get a table. So very popular place for poor food?

Are you sure you are not getting confused with the one on the way to Henfield?

As you say I must have been unlucky but having one what I called a poor meal have never gone back. I know somebody who is thinking of buying it, well the lease as it is an Enterprise Inns leased pub.

If you fancy having the old Bombay Ring syndrome, the Six Bells at Chiddingly is a terrific pub that serves Harveys and the hottest Chilli Con carne on the planet!!!!

the rest of the food is excellent also.

Well MofH that has been there all day and hasn't been shouted down, much to my surprise.
So if it's a sunny day on Sunday I suggest you give Amberley some serious contemplation.

I shall be checking them all out in turn, some of them look superb...maybe not all on the same day. Shame about the lack of lunch provision at Bracknell Towers though.

Is that not the Shaves Thatch Restaurant which is all boarded up on the road from Cowfold to Devils Dyke.

The 'Shaves Thatch' has just had a brand new thatched roof installed, gutted the inside, filling in the pond, and completely refurbishing to become a Ginger Man (or 'Ginger Pig'). It's one of those places you have to book in advance, so you can shell out about £100 for your evening meal.

I think it's the Chalvington one I meant. Being the size I am, I find it all too easy to hit my head on the beams in there.
