Well it was what I supped at my mothers breast.

I suppose it is what a lot of people have drunk man and boy. I enjoy other pints, including Dark Star. But I love a pint of Harveys (Old in particular).

It just seems that the good people of sussex have a tremendous loyalty to harveys. Not because they're any good but because they are the only one on offer and they've been around a long time so it's tradition. There is a fellow ex-sussexonian in my local he swares by Harveys, i was talking to him the other day and he looks forward to visiting family at christmas in ditchling just for the Harvey's. My problem is i only like pale hoppy beers something i've never seen harvey's do. But if you enjoy it thats all that matters. But if you can, get yourself to an ale festival and sample some of the delights of the country.

Just because many people like Harvey's, it doesn't follow we're immune to anything else. And there are plenty of other beers on offer.

I only came to live in Sussex 15 years ago and as I am pushing 50 have drunk lots of beer from Cornwall to the Orkneys in UK and every Continent except South America AND......

Harveys Best is a lovely beer, certainly in my Top 10 and you a lucky lot to have it so close to hand, when I grew up in Cheshire we had Greenall Shitney, sorry Greenall Whitney and the odd Boddingtons/Robinsons pub if we were lucky.

You could have been saddled with a crap local brewer like we were.

Funnily enough I am not so fond of all their other brews, I think the Bill King Old is far nicer than the Harveys version and the Arundel Mild is better than the Harveys as well.

Dear me, what a sad world where we dont all think/drink the same eh?

You've not had Harveys Knots of May then?

I've often passed this pub cutting through from Merton High Street to Merantum Way. Would never have dreamed of going in there if you hadn't posted. Will give it a try before Christmas.
It's ace. I'm fairly sure you could indulge in a fairly relaxed shit in their toilet.

Funnily enough, as we were leaving, thoughts turned to the next establishment we should attempt to save. One of my chums started talking about trying The Jerusalem in that there Clerkenwell, London. The irony being that I have indeed been to that place with some of NSCs finest on several lunch hours.

..There is no bad beer, just some that it better than others! I commend to the imbibers on this board "Titanic Stout" in bottles from Morrisons (other supermarkets are available) at 4 for £5.50. A live beer that tastes like Guiness used too, luvverly. Also do Summer Lightning and other fine ales.

Or just go to Lewes and top up with Harveys straight from the Brewery Shop at around £1.60 a pint if you take your own container!

I've heard they do a seasonal pale in the summer but, i drink pales year round so i'd be screwed if i lived in Sussex, save for DS Hophead, but i've only ever found that in one pub in Brighton

You can get Hophead it in the Evening Star, the Lion and Lobster, the Neptune, the hand in hand...

Hope this helps

Marks and Spencer do a Sussex bitter, brewed by Hepworths, the offshoot of King and Barnes post its closure. and its very nice:cheers::drink::p

Sussex Golden Ale Delivers a refreshing flavour and a traditional Sussex 'hoppy nose'.
"...[Sussex Ale is]...light and citrus with a crisp, bitter finish and is deeply refreshing."Recommended by Johnny Ray, Daily Telegraph, October 2009

I was in this place on Wednesday night, and was pleasantly surprised to find Heveys best on draught :

As for better beers, personally I'd rate Exmoor Gold as nicer. I'm also fond of Marstons Pedigree but it's all down to personal taste.

I am on a Good Beer Guide pub crawl in town tonight. Avoiding the usual Evening Star, Lord Nelson, Basketmakers etc, both the Neptune and Lion & Lobster are on the list.

You doing the Charles Napier at the top of Southover? Lovely drop of Gales in there.

And there's always Harveys or Timmy T's Landlord in the Greys on the way down.

Don’t forget Fallen Angel in East Hoathly – another microbrewery punching above its weight and fighting the virtual Harvey’s real ale monopoly. Quite partial to the Fire in the Hole chili beers. Think their artwork may have something to do with their popularity.
