Don’t forget Fallen Angel in East Hoathly – another microbrewery punching above its weight and fighting the virtual Harvey’s real ale monopoly. Quite partial to the Fire in the Hole chili beers. Think their artwork may have something to do with their popularity.

Nice beers - I've seen them on draught anywhere though

Any idea which pub sells them?

You doing the Charles Napier at the top of Southover? Lovely drop of Gales in there.

And there's always Harveys or Timmy T's Landlord in the Greys on the way down.

Gales? We wish.

Thanks for the tips. We may go up the hill - I've not been to the Mitre and we might try the Bugle. The trouble is our capacity for the beer might not be enough for all the pubs we would like. We could drink halves - but where is the fun in that ?

You could go to The Mitre. Or you could carry straight on, and live the rest of your life.

Incidentally, Bardsley's Fish & Chip shop 30 yards up the road sells Harvey's.

Unfortunately not come across any pubs selling them. They tend to rely a lot on farmers markets/ shops, beer festivals and their internet site for sales.

As much I like real ale you do sometimes know where you are with lager.

I've often taken pints back for taking odd, but tonight for the first time I've actually spat one out... twice.

Two pints of ale that were so bad you could smell them from a mile off, there is nothing worse than something "organic" gone bad.

Prior to that I'd drank a pint, that tasted a bit odd but wasn't quite at the mushroom stage.

After the two horrors I switched to wine, but my arse is in absolute turmoil.

Avoid the Goldhawk in Goldhawk Road until they sort their beer out.

As a female real ale drinker, who currently shares a bathroom with a fellow real ale drinker, I can honestly say that I don't notice anything unpleasant in the morning. I think the worst "beer" for that morning after experience has to be John Smiths. Unfortunately it was the only beer available where I used to live.

I do like the occaisional pint of Harvey's, but I prefer a lighter ale. Fullers Seafarer or Kelham Island's Pale Rider are my pints of choice.

And of course, being a lady, real ale has no unpleasant affect on me at all

I've just produced this diagram, I hope it helps with your conundrum:
