Police searching for a missing airman have seized a bin lorry believing it may contain his discarded mobile phone.
Corrie Mckeague, based at RAF Honington in Suffolk, disappeared after a night out in Bury St Edmunds nine days ago.
Data shows his missing mobile phone moved to nearby Barton Mills, matching the route of a bin lorry.
Officers do not believe Mr Mckeague, 23, from Dunfermline in Fife, still has the phone and searches for him are continuing across Suffolk.
The phone has not been used since it was pinpointed to Barton Mills, which is about 10 miles (16km) from Bury.

In a statement, police said they are "are exploring the possibility that the phone may have been lost or discarded as the timings of the movement has been found to coincide with that of a bin lorry".
Searches by police, the RAF, Suffolk Lowland Search and Rescue and the national police helicopter have been carried out over the weekend but have not revealed "any new information".
Checks in Bury St Edmunds were also held a week after Mr Mckeague was last seen in Brentgovel Street on Saturday 24 September at 03:20 BST.

So am I and the lack of coverage does lend itself to the possibility of kidnap. It's a real worry up here as we have a lot of service families and bases.

Last seen on CCTV wandering drunkenly through Bury St Edmunds in the middle of the night. It doesn't seem like much of a plan if AWOL and I don't think anybody would deliberately put their family through this worry. I live near Bury and a night out there is about as safe as you can get anywhere so it's not looking good.

Yes this is probably because people are getting interested and asking questions.
But note, no official announcements being made by police or other authorities. But I bet there's much happening behind the scenes, considering the recent failed kidnapping of an RAF chap (by two guys of Arab appearance, who haven't been found yet)!

It doesn't seem like much of a plan if AWOL and I don't think anybody would deliberately put their family through this worry. Is there not a couple of rivers in the area? Wouldn't be the first drunk to stagger into one in the middle of the night. Having said that, it does seem like the whole thing is being treated in an unusually low-key manner, considering the recent nearby attempted abduction of a serviceman. Either way, like you say, not looking good.

Yes there are but those rivers aren't in the town centre where he went missing. Not that far away so I guess it depends on where he was headed but presuming (speculating) that he was looking for a taxi I'm not sure he would have needed to go near the river. Hopefully it all turns out ok (although looking less likely now) but there is concern in this area. It's not just the previous abduction attempt but also the foiled attack on a family day at Lakenheath.

surely though if he has been kidnapped would the perpetrators want maximum publicity and you would think something would be out there.

None of it is adding up, the phone being discarded is a worrying factor.

The bin lorry that they are on about has a weight thingymebob on it and can tell if an abnormal load has been collected and they said this has not been detected. Also they have had it a while now so one would think that a body would have been found from what you are suggesting, unlike say a phone which would take slightly longer to find one would think.

A bin lorry seized by detectives searching for a missing airman has been released, after it was found not to contain his lost phone.
Police searched the lorry after finding its route matched the movements of Corrie Mckeague's mobile phone.
Mr Mckeague, 23, based at RAF Honington in Suffolk, vanished after a night out in Bury St Edmunds 10 days ago.
Police have appealed for anyone who has seen the Nokia Lumia 435 phone in a tattered black case to contact them.
Mr Mckeague was last spotted on CCTV walking alone and eating fast food in Bury St Edmunds at 03:20 BST on 24 September.
It is thought he stopped for a brief nap in a doorway before setting off to walk the nine miles (15km) back to his base alone.

Police said they were still exploring the "possibilities around where the phone may be and searches for it are continuing".
"The work shows the phone was in Bury St Edmunds early on Saturday 24 September but then moved to the Barton Mills area."
The phone, described as being in a PVC case, had not been used since 08:00 BST on the day Mr Mckeague went missing, police have said.

Officers again renewed their appeal for any sightings of Mr Mckeague, reiterating the message his mother Nicola Urquhart gave at a press conference in Bury on Monday when she urged any possible witnesses to contact the police.
Mrs Urquhart, of Dunfermline, Fife, said someone would have seen her "good-looking lad at three o'clock in the morning walking in a pink shirt and white trousers".
Police said they had received a "small number of calls" following the family's witness appeal.

They have now asked people with private CCTV to view any footage from 24 September and to contact them if they thought it showed useful information.
The force also appealed for market traders setting up stalls in the early hours of the day McMckeague disappeared to come forward if they had not yet spoken to police.
Acting Supt Kim Warner, who is leading the inquiry, said: "If you were out in the Bury, Honington or Barton Mills area between Friday night and Saturday and saw Corrie we need to speak to you.
"He was wearing distinctive light clothing - a pink Polo shirt and white jeans or trousers - and was friendly and engaging with a number of people during the course of the evening.
"While we're particularly keen to hear from anyone who may have seen him after 03.20 BST on Saturday 24, we also need to talk to you if you saw him during the evening."
Searches for Mr Mckeague, who serves as a gunner in No 2 Squadron RAF Regiment, are continuing with help from Suffolk Lowland Search and Rescue volunteers, the RAF and the National Police Air Service helicopter, which has been flying over the Bury area on Tuesday morning.
