What I find offensive as a non racist is that people think that anything to do with apes/monkeys and black people automatically is racist. I don't think that black people look at all like any kind of animal, let alone apes. If you think something like that is racist then somewhere in the back of your mind you are acknowledging that you think that it's too near to reality. On comedy shows there are often jokes about Wayne Rooney looking like a chimpanzee, I don't find that funny, it's a very weak form of humour but nobody complains that it's racist, are white people less like apes than black people? The answer is no. When thuggish so called fans make monkey noises at black players they are being racist because that is what they are: Racist but not because they are accurate. I agree with albion534, Balotelli crushing England.

Such a confused post. Are you saying that I have to agree with the racist overtones before the picture is actually racist?

The fact I had to think for a minute to work out how people would see it as racist demonstrates to me that it isn't.

Remember different nations have different cultures and levels of what is comfortable within that society.

In the UK that picture would not be acceptable showing are only black player of a team mimicking King Kong.

It would be racist and I would not want to see it.

When I look at it, and I would assume the regular person would look at it in the same context, that its showing how well Balotelli has done in England. If you look at it, and the first thing that pops into your head is a relation to a monkey, then that's racist.

Ok then when kick Racism Out Of Football has a stall outside our club next season, get a load of these images printed up and ask if you can put them on their table for people to take in celebration of black players in our game, see how far you get. Or better still ask any black pro footballer to sign it for you see what happens, give it a go they agree with you!

You just proved my point. Why are you relating that picture to the topic racism? If you walked past that image in the street you wouldn't think anything of it. Now your saying lets stick it at an anti racism stall so your automatically making people think racist relations to the image.

If it was a white player, it would be consider a completely acceptable image. Racism is about treating different races unequally. Why should the image be labelled racist just because the player is black? Surely all humans are equal and should be viewed in the same way?

If I was at a game of football and fans started chanting monkey noises, that's racist. If I went for a job interview, but I was overlooked because of my race, that's racist. But I do not see that picture as racist. If the picture made Balotelli out to be monkey then I would consider it racist, but it's not.

No. It's a belief based on an ingrained desire of people to present themselves as better than the rest (e.g. in their comparison of their race/species/sex vs others) and then trying to find the 'right' criteria that will support them to 'prove' that. It echoes the desire of Albion fans to use whatever criteria they can to present themselves as über-fans compared to others.

Is a cat inherently superior to a wolf? Is a dog inherently superior to a rabbit?

In the end, they're just living things with different characteristics and strengths. The decision and meaning around what characteristics are most important are completely subjective.

I have just as much of a problem with it if it was just the drawing, I do not agree with what Gollywogs stand for or what they are meant to represent.
