Ok, so what is the difference for you, between the image on the jam jar and the personification of Balotelli as a monkey?

Because a Gollywog is a figure created pre WW2 that is meant to be the representation of a black citizen. The image of Balotelli is not meant to be a representation of a black citizen, neither is representing Balotelli to the relation of a monkey. It's sole, and only purpose is to present Balotelli's dominance of football in England as a mock up of the film King Kong.

Ok that clears my view as to where you see the image coming from. Cheers. But for me it is a clear representation of a black citizen (non plural) Balotelli as a monkey with all the names and banana throwing from the present and past shaping my view of how i see the image.

And that's fair enough, and I can see how you relate that. But like I said, racism causes a divide between different races, and all races should be equal. If it was a white player pictured it wouldn't be a problem, but because he is black, others and yourself relate it straight to the issue of the monkey/black racist relation.

You're post rationalisation makes no sense. Would you expect to see Pirlo is a similar cartoon? No. The cartoonist without a shadow of a doubt has used race as the basis for the representation.

Why would he use Pirlo? Pirlo has never played in England...and this was before the England game...he has no relation to England at all.

Why use King Kong!? Never once depicted in England ever. It really doesn't make any sense anyway you look at it, other than the racial connotations.

Er.....is depicting a black person as an ape racist?

Obviously the answer to that is YES

Did I miss something?

Haha, yeah right. Everyone has got their opinions, if you want to relate to racism, your just as bad as the supposed racist journalist.

That makes absolutely no sense at all. Much like your other points. Are you sure you've got all the sand out of your ears?

Like I have explained previously, but have not had anything back from it,

"Racism causes a divide between different races, and all races should be equal. If it was a white player pictured it wouldn't be a problem, but because he is black, others and yourself relate it straight to the issue of the monkey/black racist relation."

I think that your statement is misleading as it omits any reference to the real world and/or context.

OK. Imagine the same cartoon was used, except with George Bush (his appearance is often compared to a monkey in satire). This would not be racist, but it would be obvious just as it is in this cartoon, that the use of this famous scene from King Kong is to draw comparisons to a monkey.

Monkey is and has been a racist term for some time, hence why racist football fans around Europe use monkey chants and throw bananas at black players.

There is no doubt that this cartoon is racist.

If George Bush was on there it still wouldn't be comparing him to a monkey. It would have the effect of George Bush with some sort of dominance over England, just like the image does for Balotelli. King Kong is a dominating figure, and with him at the top of Big Ben it emphasises that even more. I can see the relation IF you want to relate it to that, but the image has no intention of it imo.

It's portraying Balotelli as a monkey - come on, who wouldn't see that as racist? If it's that innocent, can you imagine them using the same picture with a white player in it?

Wrong - King Kong was surely an ape, not a monkey

If a 5 year old had drawn this picture, I would agree with you because a child would be too innocent to understand the possible connotations of using an iconic ape to satirise a black person.

However as this cartoon was not created by a 5 year old, but instead a professional satirical cartoonist, I am fully confident that he was completely aware of how it is likely to be interpreted - and as there are countless other "dominating figures" in pop culture that he could have used, it is clear that it is intentional racism.

And why would an established cartoonist for a leading Italian newspaper intentionally publish a racist picture internationally, knowing he could loose everything and will cause up roar. People will try to make connections and links to cause an issue. I can see where you're coming from and I can see how you could interpret it, but only if you want it to. Otherwise it gets across the point it's trying to make of Balotelli's dominance over England.
