Without even reading the article, the fact he is an ex-soldier means nothing in terms of whether he should be banged up or not. No different to "ex-plumber" or "ex-ballet dancer".

Freedom of speech in this country is now dead.

Nope, this is called "inciting racial hatred". It's illegal. Nothing to do with freedom of speech.

Pleased someone posted this. Was the first thing I thought when I saw the thread title.

The seaside.
Some kid called Keith nicked a bag of crisps off me when I was at school. Now every time I get introduced to anyone called Keith I punch them in the face. I call it freedom of speech.

If you read it you'll see why soldier is relevant

Burning poppies to commemorate British soldiers isn't then?????

Both are abhorrent acts, neither should be used as justification for the other. Both men deserving of condemnation. Quite what is going on with the sentencing though!? I would hope that previous convictions must explain the gulf between the sentences? Both should have been locked up to think on.

That's exactly what I'm getting at. The first offender should have been jailed too.Not a £50 slap on the wrist.

I've come back home.
Being a soldier or ex soldier is not an excuse for anything and in this case the judgement should have been harsher because as soldiers you are taught not to bring yourself or the army's reputation in to question. He should have known better, let the poppy burning be dealt with by the authorities and not to rise to such baiting and thus not playing into the hands of those that are anti-UK or anti-Army. His actions have no doubt fueled many a Friday prayers sermon and turned more moderates against their own community and for this he deserves what he gets.
