you can't expect to drag two diametrically opposed cultures towards each other and make them play nicely and be civil to each other

Yes we can - London is the greatest city in the world and does it about 98 per cent right. Sydney can learn a lot from us - both the city and our producer of Aryan daughters here.

What like the black community stayed calm in Birmingham recently when a young black girl was algedly raped by a gang of asians?

But I expect you're memory is hazy on that due to the fact that their were no whites invovled???

No, this is an excellent example of how things can go badly wrong.

The boycott campaign of Asian shops initiated by some very misguided black groups in Birmingham was a disgrace and utterly racist.

It was the equivalent of these Sydney shock jock radio hosts inciting this white power mob on to the beach in Sydney.

Everyone should utterly condemn racist groups/movements like this that stir up inter-ethnic conflict.

But that was what made me so delighted about the Anthony Walker case. The dignity of the response of the family and his community. Exactly the same with Stephen Lawrence in London.

We are are actually getting far more right in terms of race relations in this country than we are getting wrong.

Hampshire Seagulls had a nice line there about conflict between the black and the Irish. Well, there were plenty of opportunities for it to happen, but it never did!

I grew up in the huge North London Irish community. We were right in the middle of the huge North London Afro-Caribbean community. Sorry to disappoint Hampshire Seagulls, there was no conflict, so my loyalties were never tested :D

It is yet another example of successful race relations in this country, and yet more proof, against all the likes of "Sydney"'s racist-seperatist blatherings, that different ethnic groups can co-exist perfectly well.

This is the norm, the likes of the Birmingham conflict (which has been excellently dealt with by the police) and these lamentable events in Australia are the EXCEPTION, not the norm.

Exactly. I live in a very arab area of London and everyone gets on fine. Obviously there are cultural differences- they dont go to the pub and I dont go to the mosque for example, but there aren't fights in the street and noone shouts abuse at each other.

LI and Enigma you are obviously 2 lucky gents that live in an area where everyone gets on. i live in an area of brum and there are not many asians about as the whites around here hound them out. the blacks are left alone. i have to plan, very carefully, my route/s as there are areas 'to be avoided' at night-time or even dusk because of racial unrest black v asian, asian v white. the blacks and whites seem to tolerate each other. just my opinion like.

Just to add to the list, I live in a part of north London with large Turkish, Kurdish, Somalian, Afro-Carib, Irish, Cypriot and other minorities. I would not say we all walk around offering each other flowers and comparing notes on Bob Dylan but we are not constantly at each overs throats or living in fear of each other either.

Thats exactly my point. Im not interested in going to the mosque like I said, but I respect that they go. Noone has to be all lovey-dovey. But I'm sure in the majority of cases people can get along.

Hampden, I hear what you're saying, every area is different.

well i commend you on your harmonious up-bringing LI ,but unfortunately the sepia tinged euphoria of a joyous ,multicultural upbringing cannot be cunjoured up over night or even in a matter of months......you have absolutely no idea of the situation in SYDNEY with regard to gang violence and crime in general..... i have spent time in johannesburg and newyork, supposedly two of the most violent cities in the world so our decision to leave sydney was not made lightly , as a man of the world i could see this shit coming and decided to bring my children to a place where they could have a safer up-bringing than where we were..!!! I am not denying that people of different races can live in harmony , i wish they could bloody well sort it out in sydney , but unfortunately the problem has been allowed to fester and been used as apolitical football for the last four or five years and has now reached the stage where a virtual police state is in the offing............do you have a grasp on politics yet mate, do you understand how things work, and do you think that some-one who does is going to sit there and let other people ruin his ,and his young family's lives....get a grip mate, get out and see a bit of the world before you are old and beaten.....!!!!!

My best mate from work lives in Sydney, he moved there last year after a long time working with me in London. He's got a young lad who was born the same day as my girl, so we are close. Amazingly, in the many hundreds of emails he's sent me, he never mentions the fact he's living in a post-apocalyptic nightmare.

I hope you'll find what you want in Perth, but I doubt you will.

Shit, 70% of the students at my university are non-white, I will have to carefully check that there are no red spots on my forehead the next time I teach.

You're a student? I don't mean to be rued here El, but when I met you in Manchester (Our game against palace) you looked about my age. You’ve given up on previous employment and fancied a change in life or what?
