Racism in Australia

"Racial tensions spark violence in Sydney

Police fought running battles with demonstrators who attacked Middle Eastern-looking people on a beach in Sydney, Australia on Sunday in a clash that resulted in at least six arrests and several injuries.

About 5,000 people had gathered on Cronulla Beach to denounce what they said were racially motivated attacks on two lifeguards last week. Those in the crowd said a gang of Lebanese youths were responsible for the assaults.

Officers used batons and pepper spray to disperse the crowd after some of the demonstrators, many chanting racial slurs, hurled beer bottles and stamped on police vehicles.

Ken Moroney, police commissioner of New South Wales, said the mob broke the windows of an ambulance and attacked two paradmedics. In another incident, people chased a woman on the beach because of her race.

"That woman was literally saved by the police officers and those officers deserve my highest commendation for the way they went about their task," he said. "The other equally offensive conduct, the absolutely total un-Australian conduct, was an attack on an ambulance."

Five people were injured in the confrontation. They included a young man who was hit on the forehead with a bottle when he tried to discourage the racial slurs.

As evening fell, the violence spread to other Sydney neighbourhoods. In Maroubra, a group of youths smashed the windshields of about 100 cars, police said.

A 23-year-old man was in hospital in serious condition after a fight in Woolooware. A radio report said he was stabbed in the back. Police said the man and his friends had been fighting with a "group of males of Mediterranean or Middle Eastern appearance."

Dozens of police in riot gear also were involved in a confrontation with youths in the Brighton-le-Sands neighbourhood close to Sydney's Botany Bay, Australia's Sky News reported.

Yes it does, as illustrated by one of Russell Crowe's early films Romper Stomper!

They once had a politician (Prime Minister?) who was opposed to Chinese immigration, and famously said "Two Wongs don't make white".

You read it here last.

I'm also pretty sure that when I lived in Alice Springs in the 70's @the Adelaide ART festival they had a Bury an Aboriginal gnome compound.

There was certainly an "Abbo" ward at A.S.hospital.

I know that at that time some employers wouln't employ Aboriginal workers because they would only stay until they'd got enough for grog, then they'd go bush.Bloody excellent choice, what!

A matter of days after Anthony Walker's murderers were tried and convicted, I don't think any country can afford to be smug.

Agreed.

Racism is a plague, and needs squashing.

I was in Cronulla on Saturday night when the riots went off. Fortunately I was a couple of km's away so didn't see any of it. Australia has a problem with racism like any other country. Problem this time was that a load of Middle-Eastern gangs "claimed" Cronulla & Brighton beaches for their own. The white population reacted with violence and it escalated.

Some really nasty scenes of 20 whites battering a Middle-Eastern looking guy over the head with glass bottles, and Ambulances being pelted with bottles too.

Nothing different from the riots in the UK in Burnley etc a few years ago though.

'muslim immigrant communities around the Western world'????

not sure it's a religion thing as 60% of Lebanese are christians and probably an even higher percentage of Lebanese expats are christian.

probably just a gang thing

Well look, the British have been vilified as 'bloody poms' ever since emigration, and I believe their record with the Aborigines would make a South African's eyes water.

I think that's a little OTT. It's not that bad. There is racism in Australia, but let's not go over the top. These riots have come a few years after the same thing happened in the UK so I wouldn't judge this country. The difference is that it looks a bit strange having pitch battles in glorious sunshine on big sandy beaches!

That based on the melting pot that is Forest Row, is it ?

London, where several people on this board live, is in Livington's words "the world in one city" . I have yet to see any evidence of your longed for race war, here.

Cod sociology alert!!!!!

Racism is part of nature. Birds chase other species off the bird table because they look different. I once saw a flock of seagulls chasing a heron off the beach. See Richard Dawkins - The Selfish Gene. It's all part of making sure your offspring/species/people who look like you survive. That your genes survive.

However man has been successful as a species partly because we're smarter than this and have learned to co-operate.

Because the UK is so crowded compared to other countries, we've all had to learn to be tolerant of our neighbours. Imagine the scene on the London Underground if it really was every man for himself down there. Or on our roads? Imagine a big brash Texan living in some of our new-build houses where families are living touching distance from the next house.

After the July bombings, there were loads of headlines in the tabloids about "We will not be beaten". People of all nationalities/religions/colours stood together to condemn the terrorists. I think in the UK we do know the importance of living in a cohesive society that goes beyond a concept of "Britishness".

I would imagine that one reason why people in Australia can be less tolerant is because they have so much space. Because of that, there's less sense of living in a society that has to co-operate and different groups can easily live very separate lives. A lot of racism is borne from ignorance.

Also in poorer communities if there's a sense that scarce resources are being given to one group rather than another (survival instincts again!) re the Aborigines then racism can easily flare up.

There's also the "last off the boat" syndrome. People in immigrant communities who've suffered racism themselves are often very intolerant of the next wave of refugees invading what is now "their turf".

Here endeth the essay...

And the Australians didn't after Bali Lush?? Of course they did. Sounds a bit like Liverpool Syndrome to me - we react better to adversity than others - utter crap of course. Australia completely stopped recently when their citizen - of Vietnamese origin by the way - was executed by Singapore. If the Ozzies were foaming racists then surely they wouldn't have cared less.

People in the UK have an utterly unfair impression of Australians - they are not all nasty racists who hate "Lebbo's", "Abbo's" and the like. It's no worse than the English with their jokes about "Paki's".

No country is perfect. Australia has it's issues, but it's racism problem is no worse than the UK - the situation is probably better in my experience of both countries

Will be interesting in Sydney during the world cup with Croatia in the same group as the Aussies. There's a huge Croatian community in Sydney, so it might kick-off there an' all.
