R.I.P. The Jungle

Silly me , I was under the impression that the Calais Jungle migrants were trying to escape from France .
Most of the people living in the Jungle haven't even registered with the French authorities. It's the reason the Jungle exists ... the French government doesn't want to acknowledge who these people are or where they have come from. They have simply been permitted to set up camp and squat there in anonymity. Closing the camp down presents a bit of a challenge to the authorities, if any record of the individuals is to be made.

You're aware they've arrived in France from various countries ripped to shreds by a bunch of militant lunatics, yes?

I think he was referring to the "must claim asylum in the first safe country they enter" part of international law for asylum seekers. Since they're supposedly refugees trying to get from France to England, the implication is that they are fleeing from France.

If their home country is not France, then they should have claimed asylum in France, or some other country.

The fact that France has completely failed in its responsibility in this respect, until today, has nothing to do with the UK.

You're not learning anything because you're not reading any answers.

I'm just trying to get the bloke to realise that a massive civil war in Syria, combined with the rise of ISIS, has displaced millions of people, literally fleeing for their f**king lives. These people didn't just congeal in a gutter in Greece or Italy or Austria or Switzerland and think "oh, England looks jolly nice". He's being wilfully ignorant of the pain and suffering of other human beings and that f**ks me off.

Now, with that being said, I'm going to flounce out of this topic before I say anything that'll end up with me being suspended.

Good day!

Right, but they arrived in those countries from....?

I'm not giving you the answer because you won't learn anything.

You don't know the answer although you are making an assumption that these are all refugees from war. People fleeing for their lives would be very happy with the first safe country in which they arrive. This indeed is the premise of international law on the subject. To travel the entire length of Europe to reach a particular country is not fleeing for survival.

I just typed " war France " into Google and it said that the last one ended in 1945 . Is that correct ?

Once the Jungle is flattened, and Brexit is implemented, what is the logic of retaining a UK border in France? Surely we will have to accept that full border controls will have to be established at the UK channel ports and that people we don't wish to admit will have to be dealt with in places like Dover and Newhaven.

If people just buy a ferry ticket to Dover, will it be a straightforward job just to put the unacceptable immigrants back on the ferry to Calais? And what would happen next?

Detention centres? In France? Or in Dover? Or Newhaven?

Should be the same as an airport, arrive without a visa then it detention overnight and deported next available flight with the airline paying,

I think everyone knows about the situation in Syria. What he's trying to tell you is that France, Greece, Austria, Italy, Germany are all safe places for these people to claim asylum. These places should therefore register them as asylum seekers in accordance with international law. Why haven't they?

Why are refugees staying in Calais? Is the UK the only safe place in Europe where these people will be free from prosecution?

Not sure they should all be tarred with your 'criminal element' brush.

I didn't say all I said a significant number, there is clearly criminal intent by most as they have already not sought asylum in the first safe country and it seems the only reason they choose to reside in 'The Jungle' is to get to England however they can, otherwise why not go through the normal legal processes to get here.

Can ask a naive question?

Was the Jungle camp set up by authorities initially or was it something that grew out of the refugees/ immigrants just pitching up and staying put before trying to get over the channel?

to be fair, its because the refugees themselves haven't made themselves known to the local authorities.

I would hazard a guess that France has deliberately allowed these camps to exist in the belief that the 'open borders' lobby who make a lot of noise over here will force the U.K. into accepting these people. The clamour and the claiming of moral
high ground is relentless. It would have been much fairer to process all applications in the countries of arrival and then to come to agreement on appropriate levels of controlled (numbers) resettlement. It feels to me like the migrants themselves are being used to advance an open border political agenda and it is all rather distasteful.

Just made the mistake of clicking on the calais hashtag on twitter. The hate and bile that people spew is genuinely depressing.

Indeed. It is not a criminal act to escape death in your homeland. Unless, of course, you take the view that IS is a legitimate government.

If, as you so naively believe , they are all "escaping death in their homeland" why aren't they gratefully claiming asylum in the safe country that is France ?
