Are Joel Lynch and Jake the boy Robinson still eligible for the youth team?
Lynch yes, Robinson no, he is 19 now.

not sure about current players but saw Ray Wilkins, Liam Brady and Steve Gatting.

Presumably Mike Gatting didn't come as he'd heard that there would be no food at half-time.

Gatting was awesome.

Strength, pace, touch and a goalscorer.

Also thought Sullivan looked safe in goal.

Well Done to all concerned.

Superb night out, and some excellent chants. A few favourites:

"You're just a small town in Moscow"
"We'll see you all next year"
"Can we have a cup of tea" (Maybe you had to be there for that one)

A well deserved win, and it's easy to see why the youth team have done so well this year. My first sight of Gatting and he has a hell of a lot to offer if we can develop him. Plenty of quality throughout the team though.

Well done lads

Thought the whole back 5 were class. Thought Hinshelwood done a great job on their best player, Cobbs put in some great challenges and attacked well, Fraser done very well considering he is a central midfielder, Sullivan looked safe and was very vocal and Tommy Elphick was brilliant, he looked like a first teamer who had dropped down to the youth. Never missed a tackle, won everything in the air and was composed on the ball, sheer class.

Argus today

Albion chairman Dick Knight has apologised to fans for under-estimating the interest in last night's stunning FA Youth Cup victory over Chelsea at Withdean.

An official crowd of 2,927 packed into the Seagulls' temporary home to see Dean Wilkins' under-18s upset the runaway Premiership leaders 2-1.

Hundreds of spectators had to be let in free to avoid a crush outside and the actual attendance looked much bigger.

Albion decided to open only the north and north east stands for the fourth round clash but they were already full before kick-off.

Huge queues were forming outside the ground so supporters were allowed in for nothing and the South Stand had to be opened. They were still pouring in with the match well under way.

Knight apologised for the chaos over the public address system at half-time. "It's an amazing turn-out and I have to admit we completely under-estimated it," he said.

Supporters allowed in without paying were asked to contribute to a hastily arranged bucket collection.

Wilkins said. "I did anticipate this. My family came down for the game and I told them to get there early. I know we were anticipating 1,500 but I thought there could be up to 3,500."

Goals by Joe Gatting and Dan Leach put Albion through to the fifth round for the second time in five seasons.

Pretty sure it was Gatting who hit the bar. So does Naylor in the Argus.

I thought it was Elphick as well! He had to sprint back into position afterwards.

Was Gatting as good or better than the Chelsea left winger?
Completely different type of player.

Gattings first touch is outstanding, he can take the ball down on his chest so well.

For his age he is strong, he can hold the ball up.

And he always looks a threat up front, both in the air and when he has the ball at his feet.

sinclair was good but mini hinsh did a very good job on him

their defence failed to cope with gattings physicality really

chelsea had a lot of "fancy dans"- white boots, gloves, fancy hair, skillful, quick

none apart from sinclair were any good though

Great result for the lads, well done to all of them and of course Wendy and the rest of the youth team set-up.
Fantastic turn out aswell, hope any of you that got in without paying contributed to the buckets going round.

I thought Tommy Fraser was excellent - very calm and composed and played really well.

Gatting was tremendous, took his goal brilliantly.

Brighton
Hamann's Howler Gifts Seagulls!
By The Kid - January 17 2006

After an enthralling cup-tie at the Withdean Stadium tonight a stronger and much older Brighton & Hove Albion side beat a younger Chelsea side 2-1 to go through to the 5th round of the FA Youth Cup.

The sense of occasion caught the officials of both Brighton and the Withdeam by surprised as more than 4,000 spectators turned up and the extremely large crowd forced the closure of the gates some ten minutes after kick-off for safety reasons. Chelsea TV reported that there were still hundreds of spectators queuing outside still trying to get in.

For those late-comers they missed Brighton taking the lead on four minutes when Joe Gatting, nephew of ex-England captain Mike Gatting, netted after Harry Worley completely missed his clearance.

On eight minutes Man of the Match Scott Sinclair picked up a poor Brighton defensive clearance just inside the Brighton half and ran and ran with the ball before slotting home back across the sprawling goalkeeper, John Sullivan.

On twenty-one minutes Brighton scored again as Chelsea 'keeper Hamann completely missed a Brighton corner, in the ensuring melee, Chelsea cleared off the line THREE times before the ball fell kindly to Leach who slammed the ball home.

Prior to the third goal of the game. Watkins had a shot cleared off the line. Sinclair forced Sullivan into a fine diving save but luck wasn't on Chelsea' side.

If the first half was Brighton's then the second half completely belonged to Chelsea. Chelsea had all the possession, Sinclair created havoc down the left and Sullivan was forced to make a brilliant point-blank save from Shaun Cummings midway through the second half.

The last ten minutes saw a flurry of bookings the worst being a crude tackle by Bridcutt on Brighton's Chamberlain. Bridcutt got booked for the tackle and Chamberlain was booked for reacting, which caused about ten players to get involved.

Five minutes from time after good work by Elmer and Cummings and from a low Elmer cross on Chelsea's left, Sinclair side-footed just past the post. Prior to that James Simmonds hit a free-kick also by the same post.

On the whole Brighton deserved their win purely because they were older and that little bit more wiser, but for Chelsea's efforts they did deserve that second equaliser.

Aw, bless!
