You need to get out more.

I go to a working mans club with my Dad, each Sunday hey have a meat raffle, it never ceases to amaze me how these old timers, buy £5.00 worth of tickets to win £2.00 worth of sausages.

It really isnt a good indicator of poverty.

I do not think they hope the outcome is they are paying £5 for £2 of sausages. They are paying £5 in the hope they will win a better dinner. That seems sad to me.

But you are not suffering are you. Surely, there's the point (although I am sure there are many in poverty that would say they are not suffering, but that is probably more a case of their character at work.)
No i'm not "suffering" and neither are the people you talk of, they just havent got a lot of spare cash for luxuries .

HT is VERY metrosexual, you know the sort , carries a manbag, bit of a slaphead yet still uses a hairdresser instead of going to the barbers.

This is a back-handed compliment. Thank you. Funnily enough I'm off to Barberellas in an hour or so.

Excellent. So you are happy to go and live in Easterhouse, Glasgow? You reckon there's no poverty problem in the UK. That's a delusion that is a result of where you are.

With regards to Sunderland...

25.4% - that's over 15,000 of our children and young people are living in poverty in Sunderland. 64% of these children are in lone parent families. An even greater number, over 30,000 (51%) are living in low income families, finding it hard to manage day to day family life and unable take part in many of the opportunities and experience that many of us take for granted.

No dont give me slanted stats, give me the figures.

Some communities are blighted by drug and alcohol abuse and the weather up north can be pretty shitty, but that doesnt mean poverty.

Be clear here, give me the figures of a single mum, living in a council flat, factor in the subsidy on free school meals, her rent paid for etc. and then we might see if poverty exist.

you're right, there is unfortunatly poverty here in the UK. but as soon as you start spouting stats you lose your argument because you are using some arbitary measure of "poverty" that is relative. what the statisticians in the UK qualify as poverty is pretty high compared to how some in the world have it - so high that they would rather come here to live in our "poverty". certainly talk of not having a joint of meat on a Sunday is not poverty and shows someone who doesn't really know what they speak of.

Not being able to afford meat for your "supper"( I'd love to hear you asking for your "supper" up there)but having the spare cash to be in a fruit machine arcade is poverty is it ?

Spare cash? Maybe they're bored of vegetables and trying to get a Fray Bentos pie on the cheap?

You serious, jeeeez you really have a patronising view on some.

They are all decent retired gentlemen, some are wealthy some are not but none of them are living in poverty, its just a flutter, it makes me laugh. but I laugh with them not at them.

You really think thats the case ?? If so , your more out of touch than any professional politician.

Do you really think people are going to a club and hoping to pay over double for a string of sausages then? I think my suggestion is more plausible.

That's fine then. If they have disposable income to do this. But it is a world away from being tempted into an arcade by a Fray Bentos pie which was my original point.

Hold on your talking about some dysfunctional communities, this doesn't constitute poverty in those areas.

Those living within those communities have problems which is another issue, but they will be receiving benefits equally ( maybe more accessing other funding ) as those in less 'deprived' areas.

That again doesnt show increased poverty.

A window display showing a meat pie would suggest this is the case would it not? Are the window displays at Harvey Nicks designed to turn me away?

Er, you want the example of just one person? What? Do you want me to do this one person at a time?

1 in 5 children in the UK is living in poverty. To give you an idea of what that means - it means they are living in a family that has an income of £250 per week. And that does not exclude housing costs.

So, after you've paid housing costs (which yes, are subsidised) you then have to buy food etc. Of course, in such a happy situation as this, when faced with all the joys of the world, you're not going to consider cigarettes and alcohol are you. I'm sure they just exist on a nice balanced vegetarian diet! No. We shouldn't be surprised that people who live without hope turn to things like fags and booze - but that certainly doesn't mean that they all do.

Poverty does exist. Even the Tory government admits it exists. No political party is blind to the fact that in the UK poverty exists.

When have I ever said this before? Come on. So no, you're wrong. The sentiment of my postings holds.
