Same as ,we might know each other?, I played football for Tatsfield rovers with slimy toad ( Simon Fitzgerald ) and Dave Burke would watch on the sidelines.

Johnny seemed to be a bit less confused after the death of his wife Brenda and had his teeth done and have cracked off a few singles and two albums so I am sad to hear he may be regressing 😟[/QUO
Martin and Rob keep an eye on him as do many locals in my road, he's always happy to stop and chat, I think he's just lonely and needs his live music rather than his intake of booze. Hopefully things will change soon and he can get back on stage.

Some great memories, a lot of 'Me, me, me' from Annie Nightingale though.

Finishing the first programme with an extended My Way from Sid Vicious was dire.

Any favourites? I don’t mind a long list :lolol:

I love that era/genre so much. The music of my youth.

Mate, you need to see my 7" singles collection. I bought absolutely everything that was kosher (and a few that weren't, like Radio Stars) between 76 and 79. You name it (apart from the first pressing of anarchy in the UK) I've got it

The missus has just found the prog on the TV iPlayer so I'll be balls-deep later. MOTD can do one.

Annie Nightingale is a lovely lady she used to buy a ticket to travel up on a Sunday for her radio show and we would pass her requests and always get mentioned on her show as this is a request from the Ticket Office staff at Brighton Station.

That's deffo one single I didn't buy.

I remember her programme on R1 in 79. Very bland. She was a big fan of the likes of Billy Joel. Not very punk, or post punk or new wave or....anything really

Yup.

Peel and Kid Jensen were streets ahead.

Including your Brotherhood of Man collection?

Did the vinyls follow you around the world ..... from Foredown, to the Chelsea Marxist squat, to Vancouver?

My genre of music. Much as I like punk (The Clash, The Stranglers and Crass especially), it was really what came afterwards, in its wake, that I really loved - and still do.

Bands & singers like: Killing Joke, Psychedelic Furs, Wire, Gang of Four, Klaus Nomi, PIL, Bauhaus, The Slits, The Birthday Party (Nick Cave), Echo & The Bunnymen, Sotf Cell, The Mekons, Siouxsie & The Banshees, The Cure, Devo, Cocteau Twins, Marc Almond, The Only Ones, The Monochrome Set, The Au Pairs, The Chameleons, Joy Division - and then towards the mid-1980s, The Smiths, Half Man Half Biscuit, Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds and The Wedding Present, and a bit of Goth like Sisters of Mercy, The Mission and Xmal Deutchland.

When I first met Mrs Peteinblack, I knew she was 'the one' because she liked all of these bands too, whereas most of our friends and acquaintances had never heard of them and thought that we were 'weird'!

Not only do we still play these bands regularly, but of those which are still alive and touring, we still go to their gigs - have seen Killing Joke, and Wire (and bought all their recent albums - both bands have actually got better with age), 6 times each in the last 10 years, and last autumn, saw the Psychedelic Furs at The Roundhouse in Camden - one of the best gigs ever.

And our last gig, before the first lockdown, was Half Man Half Biscuit, in Bristol -- again, they were absolutely brilliant live, and are now playing bigger venues than they've ever played before in their career.

Very good! Post punk, and the music tat has grown from it is my thing. If I may I'll add to your list. I'll be interested of you know them. The last in the list are the unluckiest band ever - sound like a cross between the Cult and Theatre of Hate which, to my ears now, is fab but, back in 87 they would have been brutalized for being 4 years late and 'derivative' (I came across them only very recently). The public can be so . . . . :

MX80 Sound
Normil Hawaiins
Blue Orchids
Tuxedomoon
UK Decay (listened to them today, oddly)
Theatre of Hate/Spear of Destiny
Moev
Minimal Compact
Danse Society
The Clan of Xymox
Skinny Puppy
The Burning Skies of Elysium

And of course, from Brighton, The Last Cry (the singer - amazing voice - is an occasional poster on NSC)

Came out of the Suite/Event one summer evening after Squeeze having been right near the front. You could literally wring your t-shirt out on to the floor from the perspiration. Happy Days. Billy Bragg was always good in there.

I saw both of these bands in Brighton, Grand Parade, think it was called The Basement, probably around 80 81

UK Decay hailed from Luton I believe?

Saw them supporting the Dead Kennedys in Camden back in the late 70s

For My Country/Unwind (great drumming)

:lolol:

I left the vinyls at my parents' house when I went to Canada in 82. Thank goodness. Got divorced while I was there and the ex kept everything that we'd left at her parents' place. Reunited with Blighty and the vinyls in 86. All looking lovely (I had a look yesterday - they have temporary home in the shed).

Can’t remember where they came from, just remember they were very good when I saw them. I’m not sure if I still have them but I did have some photos from the gig, we also met the band and took some pics.

Dead Kennedys at Jenkinsons, that was also a good night.

First album 1978ish. Second album 2014 ish. The latter was recorded in Deal and one track on it (slightly self-deprecating) is called 'Heavy Metal Jews' :lolol:. In between these albums the singer was in a band called Furyo (Brechtian punk, very odd and rather good).

I love 'For My Country'. When I first heard it I feared they might be little hitlers - clearly not. I love a track with a bell sound on it (the original version of Dead Popstars by Miss Grogan and chums - genuinely forgotten the band's name momentarily, and Nowhere Girl by B Movie spring instantly to mind), and, throw in a cannon going off and it's all gravy :lolol:

Wasn't the Basement under the art school or poly in the Old Stein? It was pimarily (if not exclusively) a 'punk disco' when I went there in 77. Apologies if my little grey cells aren't what they once were (which isn't all that, to be honest).

Always felt like a wee small victory when punk gatecrashed TOTP where Brotherhood Of Man was the cosy Light Entertainment norm. Even more so when Whispering Bob Harris had to reluctantly concede airtime to punk on OGWT at the expense of his usual dreary doodlers

The classic New York Dolls intro before Jet Boy which he did through gritted teeth is a TV classic and a wake up call to the bosses to put the old relic out to grass if there ever was :lolol:

Aah The Basement.

In my days distributing leaflets as an active member of the Young Socialists.we spent many a fine evening in there.

Wish I could recall the name of the lovely young lady responsible for recruiting' me but she was very pleasant.

I believe I might still be a member.

Yes Art School or Poly, but I wouldn’t call it Old Steine, Grand Parade I believe, sort of opposite King and Queen pub.

TFFT. Thought I was losing my marbles.

Regarding place names, as a Portslade lad, it took me ages to work out the difference between Boundary Road, Station Road and Carlton Terrace

Really didn't care much for the punk rock era. Too much spit and angst and not much talent. The one notable exception being The Stranglers. They had all the attitude and menace and controversy followed them. But crucially they could write a decent song and play their instruments. Greenfield's rippling keyboards and JJ's growling bass tone were to die for.
