Fact is that a lot of publicans do not offer value for money. How many times have you heard the phrase, "Well it's Bitter. It should taste like that."

Yes the price of a pint is prohibitive and the supermarkets charge an awful lot less, but some of the blame must be at many publicans who cannot simply care to serve their products properly. A goo case for this was last Saturday. Krispies and I very rarely get out together that much and after the game chose The Basketmakers. now this is a pub we both like, but not one beer was good. That's right not one. In the end, as we liked the company in there, we had bottled beer. which in a hostelry with it's great reputation was sad.

I agree with you sentiment but pubs are MUCH better at keeping ale than they used to be. Also, I've never had a bad pint in the Basketmakers in ten years (and I'll admit to being very fussy).

not suprised, with the smoking ban and the increases of alcohol, unless the pubs start doing decent food, then its aslippery road.
I drink in two social clubs the empire in lancing, where they have orangeboom fixed at 2.oo all year, and very cheap bottles, also beechhams sportsclub, again cheap,
mates i know drink in southwick sports club, these are busy places and altough i dont drink too much now, prefer to go in these places,(decent snooker too).
Saying that im off on a pub crawl later in shoreham, but thats a one off!
.!

Genuine question, can you name any of the lewes pubs that have closed down apart from the ones above? apparently even the bridgeview club has gone ?

Well, I can remember - although I wasnt old enough to drink in them - the Fountain (South Street) the Railway (Friars Walk) and there used to be a pub inEastport Lane. There was also a pub in Mallling Street just north of the Tunnel entrance which disappeared in the early 1970s; I can't remember its name.

I was old enough to drink in the Bar in the Old Cattle Market (where my Grandfather sued to work) once but I can't remember its name - or indeed if it had one.

Thanks Greens :(
I'm not sure about the loss-leader argument with regard to supermarkets, although some of their 3 cases for £20 offers seem cheap, but another factor in the equation is alcohol sold by corner shop type establishments. In Brighton, it seems every main street has loads of shops selling more or less booze only, shipped in from the cash and carrys, and sold at prices competitive with supermarkets. Years ago, licenses to sell booze were very hard to come by, but with deregulation, every Tom, Dick and Amir is knocking it out ???

The Railway in Friars Walk. And The Manxman but don't know where that was.

If pubs dont offer quality ales, food and service they deserve to go under.

I was in the Queens head outside the station last week, i had to shout across to the barman and ask him if he worked here to get served, despite seeing me and others waiting he just ignored us and carried on chatting to his mates in the corner.
In the Sussex, i was asked for £3.60 for a pint that was one third froth, when i offered £2.40 for it as it was only 2/3rds of a pint i was looked at like I was in the wrong FFS, but they did fill it up for me.

nowhere near Burgess Hill
Also Wetherspoons soon to be renovating and re-opening The Priory. The problems is that 'the bars' like Savannah in HH and Quench in Burgess Hill will never be the same as or have the same atmosphere as a pub, they are just glorified cafes that sell alcohol. This is ok if you are orientated towards continental type cafe bars but not if your preference is an British type pub.

Is that definite on Spoons taking the Priory ?, I knew they had applied ages ago but not heard anything more since then and not seen any movement there.

There is a notice displayed applying for planning permission for conversion and according to my son one of his mates attended an interview for a management position there.

The Hebe was hardly recent, 25 years ago at least I would say, I grew up on West Street and can't remember it ever being a there, I am 31. Same can be argued for the Kings Head that was at least 20 years ago. These pubs are not part of the recent trend for pub closures but victims of the fact Shoreham had too many oubs for a town of it's size.
The Kings Head was falling down, thanks mainly to the neglect of Watney's who were holding on to it solely for the purpose of cashing in on the Ropetackle redevelopment - which took years to materialise.

Many's the good night I had in there, though. I think it was the last Watney's pub to sell its beer from a barrel sitting on the counter. When The King's Head finally closed, the landlord was relocated by Watney's to The Snowdrop in Lewes (another pub they'd allowed to run down).

quite. while we lament the loss of good pubs, theres a alot of shitholes closed. btw, why put put up with poor service, especially in Brighton? walk out (indeed flounce out) and go 50 yards to another pub.

The manxman hasnt closed down , was just renamed the dorset arms.
Re-named the Dorset Arms, if you don't mind. It was only called the Manxman during the thankfully short period when it was run by a nasty racist, who was a veteran of HMS Manxman.

The current form of The Dorset Arms owes a lot to the rebuilding work that Harveys did when they took the place over.

But as mentioned before supermarkets use alcohol as a loss leader. I'm sure it costs a lot more than £1.34 to put a pint can in a supermarket, but they are allowed to get away with it. Pubs have no such luxury.

I agree though that a lot of pubs take the piss - 4.50 for Italian piss water is ridiculous.

I didn't really have supermarkets in mind, I was more talking about corner shops / off licenses - shirley they can't be selling cans of beer as loss leaders.

It definitely used to sell cider from a barrel on the bar. Used to drink in there when I was 15/16 and I was there for the last night. My brother still has the chain from the gent's toilet.

The Red White and Blue.

The interesting thing about Lewes pubs was that Harveys had an agreement with Beards that meant that Harveys would run NO pubs in Lewes at all. Except for The Swan (which didn't count, because it was in Southover).
