Many an Albion fan cut their drinking teeth in the Ball Tree - and it was Sompting, not Lancing. Another family local, the Clifton, is sadly gathering dust. Changing times and a changing working class.

Most pubs occupy quite a large piece of land that makes them ideal to build flats on. A small pub like The Duck in Haywards Heath was demolished and a Sainsburys and Pets at Home built in the site.

Shoreham has it bad too.....

In the last little while we have lost:-

The Kings Head
The Morning Star
The Burrells
The Surrey
The Hebe
Blimey, you've got a memory, The Kings Head closed in about 1985 and The Hebe closed in about 1979! The old Radio 1 DJ Annie Nightingale used to drink in there. Didn't know the Burrells had gone.

Indeed we did. I noticed it had closed last June, but then it re-opened again. Sad if it's gone for good

The Fountain was a gay pub I think. Very brave to change a local village pub to a gay pub but it worked really well for them in the first few years. Then the landlords split up and it all went down from there I think.
I dont live in the area but I heard that a few in Burgess Hill have gone. Not bad news on about some of them though like the Junction or the Duck in the Heath.

Its a tough old world, not helped by the likes of Tesco/Asda/Sainsburys etc selling cheap alcohol. Also the bottled ales and lagers that are available in the supermarkets mean you don't specifically have to go to the pub to enjoy your favourite ale. All sad news for publicans....

I live in a place where everyone can afford to go for a beer. They must not tax it very much here I would think. 10 pints = 7 quid.

We've lost a few in Lewes over the years. The Windmill, The Meridian, The Prince of Wales and The Fruiterers to name a few. And many more if you go back down the years long enough. A couple of years ago I bought two bottles of Becks in a pub in London and they charged me £7.50. Last Christmas, with the help of a money off voucher, I bought 36 bottles for £10. That's one of the reasons why pubs are going bust.

The Meridian has gone?
You do have to keep up in Lewes to keep a pub going and the Meridian did not have a lot going for it.

Genuine question, can you name any of the lewes pubs that have closed down apart from the ones above? apparently even the bridgeview club has gone ?

Fifteen years ago a can of lager cost about a pound, today a can of lager still costs about a pound. Yet the price of a pint must have about doubled.

In 1977 a pint was 26p......2007 it was £2-60.

That actually shows that beer prices aren't rising as much as you'd expect. If you think that property prices have increased by more than 10-fold in that time (which obviously has an impact on pubs) and that, since 1979, there's also been a shift from direct taxation to indirect taxation, so beer duty has increased, you'd expect the price rise to be even higher.

Supermarkets using beer as a loss leader certainly doesn't help but there are other factors too. More people have central heating these days, so there's no need to go to pubs to stay warm (cinemas had this function too), people work longer hours and travel further to get home so there's less free time. I expect we'll see a few more pubs close down in the coming years.

What's remarkable about Brighton is how many stay open. My Bermondsey-living in-laws regularly comment on the number of genuine pubs in Brighton, so it's not all bad news.

King Street & Portland Street

A fine clear photograph of the Running Horse Inn, taken on 8 August 1960. Built in the 1780s it closed in September 1964 and ended its life as a carpet store.

Gloucester Road
The Canteen Inn at the corner of Robert Street, 8 September 1963. As its name and the wall cannon suggests it was associated with the Headquarters of the 1st Sussex Volunteer Artillery across the road and it replaced an earlier Inn of the same name which was at 115 Gloucester Road. It was demolished in December 1966 for a future extension of the Southern Publishing Company’s premises
