Yep. Me too. The reality is trade will be down up to 50% due to restrictions. The good thing is, we will still be able to leave people on furlough untill October, hopefully we'll be in a better place then. An awful lot of people won't come back to work through choice as well.

Overall, MaB have navigated this crisis well, I've got no complaints on that front. They've also promised the entire workforce a party when this is over, which is a nice touch.

I agree, a certain Mr Martin could learn a lot from your companies response.

Personally I couldn't agree more with you but then I'm guessing we both aren't regular clientele of Mr Martin's premises. Plenty of people are though.

There's so many factors to reopening not just the social distancing of public but many pubs have small serving and back of house areas.

There's also a huge issue around the shutting down process and if it was correctly done. Many "lock up" premises did just that lock up. Beer still connected, lines dirty etc. Then there's the fact that systems turned off don't always start again when switched on. It's not just the case of switching on, connecting beer and serving.

A lot of the service engineers are on furlough, some have gone bust. The industry has been in discussions to put rivalry to one side and teams of technicians from all the main brewers working together to get outlets open. This may work, but is yet to be agreed. Innserve are still closed, MolsonCoors have a skeleton staff of tech's, Harvey's tech's are all over 90 so isolating.

Then outlets need to be careful what they offer, if they have a load of draft products, due to the limited amount of sales they might need to limit their offering, this could lead to issues with the Lead Brewer status within the outlet which lead onto ownership of the dispensing equipment and contractual obligations. While many brewers will turn a blind eye in the short term the likes of Heineken (HUK) will continue to be cut throat.

As a company we are working will our key customers but until there's more defined rules around what will be allowed we can't really do anything. It's a frustrating time all round. Even my beer allowance options have been restricted not being able to visit the breweries.

Very true, when the boozers do open My supping will be more a show of support for the landlord/lady, been a terrible time for them.

My local has 4 urinals in the gents, they are nowhere near 2m apart so I assume only 2 will be used.
So, even after you have gone through the palava of getting a drink whilst maintaining social distancing, you will then have to wait outside the toilets keeping 2m apart whilst bursting for a piss.
Sounds like fun.
The only silver cloud is your face mask should stop you getting a whiff from the bloke in the cubicle.

It's hard to argue with that. A pub should be a place where you can go, and just relax without having to engage the brain too much. Having to worry about the 2 metre rule is something that no one will want to have to do.

I don't really think the interior of pubs / restaurants / cafes will be appealing for customers until the social distancing rules have been ditched and we are back to more low key measures like regular hand washing. Other countries are moving quickly through the release of lockdown measures so that might not be too far off but I guess we are looking at a couple of months maybe.

So perhaps we will see these businesses open but mainly using outdoor seating and table service from the start of July, then we will have a period of waiting to see the figures go down further and watch what other countries do before allowing use of interiors without perspex screens / masks / 2m spacing etc. We will get there eventually,and it may not take too long. With countries taking steps like allowing fans into sports events already (e.g. Australia) it shows how quickly things can get back to something like normality. I appreciate all the concerns etc. but I'm just looking at the trajectory that countries further down the line are following.

Seems like pretty much everything possibly back open by 4 July then. Only outliers possibly larger / denser gatherings e.g. nightclubs, gigs, spectators at sports, festivals etc.

I did see NZ is going back to sports spectators attending, and a few other countries have done. And some Spanish and Italian footie clubs seeking limited fan attendance...

New Zealand has one very different statistic from the UK, it is free of Covid-19.

Agree but do remember, we are usually clueless in this country so we are bound to still have one of the highest virus rates in Europe even in 2 months time . People entering the UK are mainly not going to be self quarantining & I doubt it can be effectively enforced .

I think Government / councils will be pretty chilled about people drinking on the pavement outside pubs as well, but can't see people doing that respecting social distancing. Maybe some have an option to just bring a couple of staff out of furlough to see how it goes.

If pubs move to table service more, that is arguably a boost for the customer as it can be more convenient than queuing at a bar- assuming the staff are decent at it and there are enough staff to provide a relatively quick service... We don't seem great at that in the UK but I've had plenty of experience of great table service on the continent. I guess its a cultural thing.

The only thing stopping it really would be if there is a restriction in the pub license. But I think Gov will probably ask councils to be chilled out enforcing that sort of thing unless there is a safety issue- blocking the pavement etc. Plenty of London pubs make a decent living from punters spilled out on to the pavement. Could even maybe cordon off a bit of the road outside each pub to form some outdoor space if its a quiet road or its the sort of place that people would actually want to stand outside. Could see that working in Brighton centre in some cases.
