Pubs now.

Thanks Greens :(
The Selden Arms is stuck in the 50`s.
No music, friendly folk who like a chat and the best beer in the area by a country mile....... Oh yes and a good landlady.

Its the 50`s all the way for me.

But I bet a pint of Fosters is three gib, rather than a more fifties 1/6d?

Depends on the pub.......having mostly taken a break from pubs for a good long while now, I do tend to order bottles more on the grounds that on the odd occasion I have a pint I really notice how often the pub clean their pipes out, ie not very often for the most part.

Which is why The Hungry Years used to do a roaring trade in bottles of Newcastle Brown. Not necessarily a rocker's drink, but preferable to the patchy draught :(

2 mistakes there:

Fosters wasnt about in the 50s in fact no lager was I dont think. Carlsberg was available in bottles early 60s and the first draught lager that I sold was Tuborg in 1968 for Trumans.

No beer was 1s 6d in the 50s more like 10d (4p) pint off the top of my head.

That's about right. When I started drinking in 1973 beer was 15p a pint, so I doubt that it had only doubled in price in 14 years - particularly given the rate that duty went on it.

Prior to decimalisation day (14th Feb 1971) we sold best bitter at The Earl Russel in St Pancras for 1s 11d a pint but due to the change over this became 12 p ( 2s 5d) this was the start and the making of inflation as we know it now.

Probably because they're a not together anymore landlord & landlady.

Yeah I knew that, but it doesn't mean he has to be rude to customers. I'll give you two examples:

1) A month or so ago a couple (proper regulars, unlike me apparently) walked in the door at the same time as I got up from my seat and approached the bar. We did that "You first" "No, you first" thing for a bit and it turned out that I would go first. "Thank you" I said and I arrived at the bar, started to place my order when Mr Happy cut me short and said "I'm serving the people behind you first". Charming.

I put it down to a misunderstanding, "proper" regulars' priviledge or whatever but then, a week or two later, something even more rude happened:

2) On a fairly quiet weekday evening (three or four tables and the bar occupied) when he'd just finished serving someone, I was the only other person waiting to be served. I started to place my order and was cut short again so that he could go and clear a couple of glasses and a crisp packet from one of the seven or eight remaining tables, the rest of which were clear.

I'm a polite person, quick with a smile, not to mention "Please" & "Thank you" so it's not like I've been rude to him.

I've been giving The Alexandra a go lately. It's nearer to home, the beer's good and the staff are really friendly. I'm sorry not to go into the Selden for the sake of the beer that I'm missing but Mr Charmless doesn't deserve my money.

I'm not surprised they've split up. If I was her I'd have kicked him into touch years ago.

That came about when Techenquiz the owner put the company into administration at midnight owing £400m and then bought the company out of administration next morning for £150m and reopened all of the Yates, bar 90 lowest profit earners or highest rent establishments of which Worthings was one. Is going to be Tesco Express.

What makes that worse is Walkabout wanted the place. Why do we want ye ANOTHER Tesco express in Worthing?

Does anyone know what's happening in Cafe Central?

Jordan & Cook were the agents being used by the owners to rent it out and one of my sons asked me to enquire about it. I did this and was quoted a rent in excess of £114.000 per annum was wanted and I had to submit an offer, which obviously I didnt follow through. This is probably the reason Techenquiz didnt reopen it when he bought Yates out of administration.

Ouch, BG, there's rounding up and there's rounding up - that's a 26% increase.

And a couple of years later, VAT was introduced, adding more to it.

Is that the Lord John Russell in Marchmont Street? That's near my office - in fact, I may well in there this lunchtime.

Too far from the sun
Nearest pub to me in Worthing they now have Greene King IPA at £1.95 a pint and Harveys at £2.10. The only problem when drinking with the fairer sex is that they quite oftem want to drink wine, which most pubs seem to sell at about £3 (or even £4:ohmy:) a glass. I'm trying to educate the missus into drinking draught beer, but no success so far. Seems it doesnt 'taste as nice as a glass of rose' or something

I`m afraid you`ve got that spot on really, he is a miserable old git. Michelle though is as friendly as you can get though her Orville voice does grate with some people. The Alex is nearer for me as well but it always looks a bit dead and they dont do Dark Star and thats what swings it for me.

No this was The Earl Russel in Pancras Road between King X Station and St Pancras Station. The pub was next door to the Railway Staff Club and hada large car park in which Jimmy Saville used to park his Winnebago. That was in 1970 but I think that it may have been demolished by now to make way for the Kings X extended station.

Oh, that's long gone then.

That must have been confusing to have an Earl Russell and a Lord John Russell within about 5 minutes of each other.
