[Albion] Pubs closing for Palace game ?

Seems like the police have been dispensing fairly sensible advice for the pubs near to the station. You can throw your hands up in faux outrage if you like, but the chances of Albion and Palace fans having a pleasant pint together wistfully musing over their respective campaigns thus far are fairly slim to put it mildly.

What do you think these people who wouldn't have a pleasant pint together are going to do before the game now? Stay at home and play tiddlywinks instead? Or just go to other pubs?

However, doesn't this just slightly shift any problem, and not that far? You don't have to walk much further than the Caxton or the Battle to find another pub. Where does the perceived trouble area end?

Don't get me wrong, I'm not criticising Darren Balkham and his colleagues - I don't doubt that they know far more about this stuff than me.

I was going to go and drink in the Caxton for the afternoon and look for some Palace fans to fight, but now it's closed I guess I'll just stay at work for the afternoon, drink only water and get to the ground by sustainable public transport just in time for kick-off instead.

That is not an unfair point, I think this more to do with reducing the risk of potential disturbances at the station (of which there is a still a risk) which will be dealing thousands of people between 6 and 7. Keeping the immediate area as clear as they can with return of rush hour commuters and fans going to the game is probably the main motivation for this policy. I would expect any muppets looking for some extra curricular activities will have planned to meet far from the station anyway.

so we have reports of 2/3 pubs closing. so is this a couple of pubs taking their own decision or actually police telling them to close (seems not given the couple closing). on previous form all pubs will be home only except the 'Spoonies, to which the Palace will be escorted to and from.

So the Evening Star is shut, The BoT is 'private party' - so probably just the normal pre-match regulars anyway, but with door control, and the Caxton is fully open, but have said they will have door staff and are not going to welcome rowdy twats.

Isn't is actually the case that they have reduced Palace's support by 1,000 but increased Albion's by 1,000 (if people buy the tickets)?

I don't understand why closing pubs helps the police. Do they honestly think that anyone who normally drinks in xxx pub is going to think 'Oh, they're closing it, I'll stay home until just before kick off then'? They're just going to drink somewhere else instead, somewhere where the police might not realise. Surely the ideal scenario for the police is that everyone who has the potential for causing trouble is all in one place, cordoned off by a line of police? Having lots of small groups wandering around looking for places to drink is a recipe for disaster.

It is absolutely pathetic that Sussex police can't handle 3,000 Palace fans coming to town, and have to reduce the capacity. Pathetic. Other Premier League clubs can handle 3,000 from Galatasaray etc. in the Champions League, are Crystal Palace really more scary and intimidating than them? The club have hit the big time- it's a real shame the police are still small-time.

to be fair, there was about 100 atalanta ultras causing mayhem in Liverpool over a couple of nights last week. My mate who is an Everton fan sai every one of their fans who came over were up for a punch up..after the game it was like syria seemly. They were singing songs about the 96 too!

Lovely. But this is partly my point- actual Italian Ultras coming over to properly kick it off is a completely different kettle of fish to a load of Nigels from suburban Surrey. The Police really should be able to cope with that.

So the police discussing with local pubs about - quite rightly - security measures can in no way be linked to the police discussing with the club the Nigel’s allocation and getting it reduced. Thought you might be able to discuss the two together but such a gulf in topics best we leave it then. We’ll wait for the clubs announcements concerning allocations about Man Utd, Spurs, WHU and maybe a couple more clubs who have a few silly Billy’s at a later date.

The police and clubs have come up with the unnecessary 2,000 limit. That's one response to a perceived issue.

The pubs each get to choose THEIR response. As far as this thread goes, only the Evening Star's seems drastic.

The BoT is normally full and not letting anyone in, pretty early on the day of a big game anyway, so calling that a 'private party' isn't really going to change anything - just gives them a 'right' to turn away anyone they don't like the look of.

The Caxton again - not closing or limiting numbers - just reserving the right to turn people away if they don't want them in. Why shouldn't they? The fella has just got the keys to the place, and it's been open about two days since an expensive refurb - in his shoes I'd reserve the right to be careful, too.
