I did get my old dishwasher stolen last week which I had clumsily left outside the house for AO to pick up.

It didn't beat the record of the "60 second bath" as we used to call it.

And old iron, any old iron, any any any old iron.
Can’t believe you don’t know the rules, leave an old appliance out and it’s for the scrap man normally gone by the morning, it’s a great free service I’ve used many a time.

This is what is wrong with the world imo. I'm over 50 now and I still remind myself of the truths of the adage "to be happy want what you have, not have what you want " yet i don't see that at all in many people younger than me.

We’re happy that we have homes and don’t pay huge amounts in rent. Shelter, affordable bills = a chance to be happy.

Younger people now spend an age compared to us living with parents or paying sky high rents, a decent financial future an evaporating dream.

Who live miles from London.

I saw some stats re Twitter that the vast majority of anti Kham racism came from outside the capital.

There was a lot of "our capital city" rhetoric well unless you pay council tax you are simply a guest and please take your litter home with you.

We are closed Wednesday afternoons.
anti-Khan racism? Are there really that many people who fill their posts with bile about Khan, Sunak, and any other dark-skinned politician? Or are more of the anti-Khan posts because they don't like his politics, with little to do with the colour of his skin?

Can you post a link to these stats?

Actually I was hoping clapham-gull would post his or her stats about Twitter users' racist hate from the shires, not from London. I don't think your article addresses that.

For that matter, your article doesn't address racial hatred either. To Zoe Williams, it is apparent that callikng someone a "stone cold loser" is a racial insult - though I can't see why. To Zoe Williams, it is apparant that describing pro-Palestinian marches as "hate marches" is a racial insult directed at Khan, but again, I can't see why. Again, Zoe Williams thinks that wrongly quoting crime statistics is a racial insult directed at Khan, which surely surprises some of the people above who didn't realise their beliefs about London crime statistics were allegedly motivated by racism.

All she has got is Lee Anderson's comments about Khan and Islamism. (Not Islam, but Islamism.) That's not enough to be a large scale racial hatred campaign.

I am sure the false quote attributed to Kahn about him introducing "shakira" law to London was about his politics. The hips don't lie.
There was a video with false subtitles of Kahn supposedly saying he would build 46,000 new homes for young Muslims, and provide free education and training for underskilled Muslims that just arrived.
In other news, he didn't say remembrance day events should be postponed to allow a pro Palestine march, or that londoners should all learn Arabic to help with unity, or pose for a photo holding up a "Sharia Zone" leaflet, and there is no exemption from ULEZ, if you are going to a mosque.

Maybe some of the people who share and repost that sort of stuff are just gullible twats, but I think for quite a few, it's because he is a Muslim.

A large portio of the cost of Housing asylum seekers comes out of the Foreign aid budget, at least it did under Tories. So if all you care about is the UK, spending money in the UK rather than overseas, is economically beneficial.
The foreign aid budget to the extent one exists is simply British taxpayers money; given the level of debt this country is in its just as accurate to suggest that the budget is part of the interminable debt burden British taxpayers are locked into, therefore ANY money spaffed abroad (whether in Ukraine, or some other shithole) is evidently not an economic benefit to the British taxpayer, like a tax cut would be.

Put another way, to cut aid to British pensioners whilst continuing lavish money on people who have arrived and not put a bean in the pot is politically stupid or maybe it’s a deliberate sign of who the Labour Party cares most about.

As popular as giving government contracts to Tory party donors? Although now said donor gives to Reform instead.

I’m shocked to see you’ve become an NSC donor, subsidising the lives of the mods who you say are useless. Is this the price you have to pay for being a proud racist?

Yep, the new Government will certainly be a change to that previous shower………….

What I choose to do with my money is little to do with you, and I’m pretty certain I have never attacked a mod on here for being useless, least of all be a proud racist, maybe your thinking of someone else?

Many of the people that arrive on the boats would have originally come from hot countries and will find an English winter hard to cope with so they need to be in hotels with heating on all winter until they become acclimatized to the temperatures here .
Pensioners have had many years to prepare for the conditions and should have stockpiled adequate supplies of warm winter clothing , bedding and beverages to see out the coldest months of the year .

Means testing pensioners is not cutting aid to pensioners. Why should someone getting a large private pension get a heating allowance?

Don’t be silly - Asylum Seeking is a fundamental human right and an international obligation that every Country has that is a signatory to the 1951 Geneva Convention. Every UK government for decades has met that obligation.

Almost all countries have cut their foreign aid budgets in recent years - in 2022 ours stood at around 0.55% of the GNI. ODA (Overseas Development Assistance isn’t straightforward tax payer’s money - foreign office spend also consists of contributions from other Countries (in joint funding-matched projects) and grants from private enterprises.

  • For the first 12 months food and accommodation etc for Asylum Seekers comes out of the ODA budget -
  • spending in on refugees that arrive in UK is around 28% of the overseas aid budget - £4,297 million which has put pressure on the oversea’s aid budget.
  • In 2023, the Tories increased the aid budget in the face of their failure to curb irregular immigration - and announced an additional £2.5 billion through to 2024 to ease the impact in-donor refugees were having on the overseas aid budget.
“Britain’s ability to respond both to humanitarian crises, such as famine in the Horn of Africa, as well as long-term development projects to reduce global poverty, has become ever more constrained, leading to some unpalatable decisions about what is funded and what is not. As Britain draws back from development, our ability to influence across the globe recedes as well.”

Just to add to my earlier response

Pension credits are a means tested benefit to top up the state pension because they haven’t paid enough National Insurance with qualifying employment years/or being on benefits. It serves as a qualifying benefit for pensioners.

It is perfectly reasonable to restrict fuel payments to those on the lowest incomes - redistribution of your tax contributions instead of lining the pockets of those that don’t need it ensuring it goes to those that do.

That’s ‘who the Labour Party cares most about’.

West is BEST
Unfortunately mental health and 'care in the community' has been absolutely decimated as a result of austerity. It was always the silent one you could keep cutting and cutting kicking it into the long grass until it all kicks off years later.

I'm sure @The Clamp can tell a few stories given his experiences and it's those other poor sods who always seem to be at the sharp end, the Police who are left to pick up the pieces and try and deal with it
The police no longer have the resources to deal with mental health cases.

When we get a shout to a mental health job, if we radio it in we just get told to call an ambulance. If we call an ambulance we’re on a three hour CAT3 wait or told to call the police. We don’t have time to be tied up for hours, we have shouts coming in all the time, jobs stacking up.

We will try to get hold of a relative or friend but that’s 50/50.

The new “strategy” is “Right Person Right Care”

Which is basically pass the buck until everyone has to stand down from the job because none of us has the resources or time to deal.

It’s an absolute shambles and people are being harmed.

You’re neither blind nor stupid, it’s been a popular trope that the Conservatives tried to weaponise in the last mayoral campaign and which understandably backfired badly. Londoners live London every day, and when somebody who wants to be their mayor runs a campaign telling them how dreadful London is, they quite correctly tell that candidate where they get off.

It’s also a handy way of being racist without overtly saying something racist. You don’t say anything negative about Sadiq Khan directly, you just deplore the fact that London now has such high levels of violent crime, and then draw a vague link between “ineffectual” political leadership and the crime rate.

Yet when you adjust for population:

London has a slightly below average crime rate. Who knew that Cleveland had the biggest proportion of scumbags per capita?
