The arse end of Hangleton
The whole episode is part of the Right's 'culture war' - create an outrage or imaginary threat (Last Night of the Proms under attack, BLM a Marxist front, Christmas being banned to avoid offending the effnix, 'Ba Ba Black Sheep' banned for being racist, etc), and then use it to attack 'leftists' and 'liberals', while moaning "It's PC gone mad; you can't say anything anymore without 'snowflakes' getting offended and having you sacked from your job."

These entirely manufactured outrages are integral to the Right's tactic of diverting public attention and (potential) anger away from the real problems - poverty wages while CEOs pay themselves £millions, food banks (in the world's 6th richest country), homelessness and unaffordable housing, the constant selling-off of our industries and companies to foreign firms and governments (the opposite of "taking back control"), the privatisation-by-stealth of the NHS and other public services (often sold to Tory donors), some of the lowest old age pensions in Europe, and the appalling treatment of the elderly in many of our so-called care homes.

But that's the whole point of the Right's pretended fury over Last Night of the Proms, migrants in dinghies in the English Channel, BLM, 'cancel culture' - it diverts public attention and anger towards 'fake' targets, and channels public outrage against 'liberals' and 'the political correctness brigade', thus allowing the top 1% to continue getting even richer and avoiding paying taxes while millions of ordinary working people struggle to feed themselves or pay their rent. Ensures that 'the people' don't turn their anger against the Tories and the Establishment.

Sadly - as a lot of posters and angry comments on here illustrate - this tactic works; people keep falling for it.

Always love how some people think there is this such definite line down the middle with 'lefties' on the left of it and 'righties' on the right. Such a black and white view when life is really much more a shade of grey.

Well, there is a surprise, the Rt Hon Member for Kemptown is wait for it...

completely against the BBC for banning the words...

https://www.theargus.co.uk/news/18674705.lloyd-russell-moyle-proms-anthems-without-lyrics-absurd/

Mr Russell-Moyle welcomed discussion about changing the lyrics, but said: “We mustn’t over-react. We’ll end up creating some fabricated culture war when there doesn’t need to be one.”

He said he believes anthems can help “bind people together” and said he was “worried about anyone just trying to remove the lyrics without more positive conversation about what represents modern Britain”.

He added: “There are legitimate reasons why you would want to change them. I find God Save The Queen an absolute dirge to tell the truth.”

What part do you take issue with?

Ironically those that fall for it are often the ones who are likely to be struggling too. Traffic wardens, drivers and the long term unemployed for example.

Forgive me for not wading through the thread but it's a lovely day.

As I expect has been said, Rule Britannia has wonderfully flowery lyrics and was first performed more than 250 years ago to support a spat with the Spanish, who had apparently been enslaving Britons (hence the slave line) and predates by more or less a century the creation of the British Empire.

I like it, but don't take it too seriously. It's a bit of fun, a lovely period piece. I do understand African and other 'children of Empire' not getting the joke though and they shouldn't be taken for granted. The context of the lyrics should be emphasised when it is performed. There is a way forward on this that is sensible and considered and needn't involved frightened white men in a panic.

Having said all that, I look at the attempts of the Mail and Express and their allies in this disreputable little government, cheered on by hordes of screeching social media warriors, to turn this into yet another one-side-versus-the-other culture war and I just feel tired. Tired of them and of what we are becoming. Let's talk about something else.

Indeed.
It is the most vociferous on either side who just can't ease back on their entrenched positions that create and encourage this constant bish-bashing.

Alternatively, one could say that it is often those with the most entrenched positions who are frequently the most vociferous.
Tolerance is sadly a victim in all of this, as is seen in the media and on NSC.

Is it just me who is heartily sick of our traditions just being eroded away in the name of BLM? Statues, the last night of the Proms where will it end? The way football has been hijacked is ridiculous. Fair play to the rugby league players who refused to 'take a knee' a shame more footballers didn't show a bit more balls and refuse to do so. This country is incredibly tolerant and yet if you read the BBC site its as if it's a hotbed of racism, not a day goes by without a new 'racism' story. I would imagine that Policing BAME people in London is an absolute nightmare as I imagine they wave the 'racism'card.I notice white people don't bang on about the Notting Hill carnival do they as far as I can see is a very Afro Car event. Where were all the 'woke' brigade in previous years when the Proms was on? It's just the latest fashionable cause.

Snowflake.

Too late to deal with most of this but I have to ask when exactly George Floyd shot a pregnant woman. I believe he was involved in an armed robbery at some point but must have missed that detail. Odd that it wasn't mentioned more...

Sorry, maybe I was wrong about that. I read it somewhere and accept I could be mistaken.

However, the general points stand. He was not some angelic, upstanding citizen, although, as I stated originally, this does not justify what happened to him. I see you haven’t addressed the fact that numerous black people distance themselves from the BLM Marxist movement.

Thanks for admitting you were wrong. You might want to think about where you get your news from.

I'm not too sure what you mean about the general point standing. When a citizen who poses no threat at that moment is killed by a policeman, the victim's past is not relevant. To call the reaction "faux outrage" is ridiculous. What's more, Floyd's death was a catalyst but not the root cause of the protests.

BLM is a global movement, made up of many disparate groups, united behind a common goal of racial justice. I don't think we need to worry about them organising a proletariat revolution.

None of it! He speaks a lot of sense. I couldn’t give less of a shit about anthems, LNATP or similar tbh.

Hopefully the BBC and England supports will stop singing the propaganda song Rule Britannia. This song like statues has a context and what may have been good for the rich to tell the poor of England 200 years whatever happens you're British, this maybe not be appropriate anymore given the exploitation we committed across the empire during this period and shortly before.

Jerusalem is a much better song that high lights our country's contradictions and miss use of power, which every empire does this isn't just us. Its a case of when do actually grow up and face that we never were a glorious empire for millions of people.

Land of Hope and Glory now number one on iTunes chart. How terribly sad and a kick in the teeth to all the BLM protestors, I bet the likes of Lewis Hamilton are ashamed of their country right now.

Good old Dame Vera, a true National treasure.
On a more personal note, I believe Lewis Hamilton should be more ashamed of driving for company that was profiteering from slavery in living memory...

Johnson's much-aired interview on this began with the words "they're trying to stop me saying this.... ".

I mean, who is? The political left? Ridiculous, when the Tories have control of half the press. The BBC? Well, they reported it as much as anyone. His own party? Unlikely. His own advisors? Possibly. But we know the PM puppet only opens his mouth when Cummings' desperately needs a distraction.

So what he's done is create a completely fictitious enemy. You know - 'them'. Those 'dangerous' individuals who want to strip us of all our freedoms in pursuit of totally unreasonable demands like, erm, equality and meritocracy. Giving everyone a fair shot at life, not just old Etonians.

And those who stand to suffer the most fall for it. Every. Single. Time.

Maybe we should organise a Take the Knee flash mob to protest this injustice.

All aboard the woke bandwagon!! Don't recall a problem about the singing of RB in the many previous years it was sung, why is it suddenly an issue now. It's history we can't just erase it to appease BLM. They won't be happy until Stormzy is involved in the proms rapping about 'injustice' and taking a knee for that vile scumbag who started this whole ridiculous movement in the first place.
