We pay £17.50 for adult cod, chips, mushy peas, and a pensioner's huss with chips.

Fish and chips has always been a lot cheaper in Yorkshire.
Proximity of Bradford to the sea?

Much as I feel the chippy's pain, some of them really don't do very much to help themselves. My local chippy has never once in decades swerved from its opening hours of 5pm to 8pm, five days a week. Nowadays it's sold out of pies by about half 6 and all that's left in the expensively-heated cabinet is a gruesome selection of pink saveloys. And of course it's CASH ONLY. I love the guys that run it dearly, they've served us brilliantly since my kids were toddlers, but in all honestly I don't know why they even bother anymore

Haywards Heath
As Ben's Grandad is sadly no longer with us, I'll do Haywards Heath.

The town only has one brilliant fish and chip shop - Mister Chippy in the Broadway. Large Cod (£9), Saveloy (£3.50) and medium chips (£4). Very generous portions and the shop is immaculately clean. Liam, the owner is a Palace fan though. :( But he does home deliveries and a Christmas card every year. Top man. 👍

Lee's - in Queen's Road (near the train station) is fairly good but portions rather mean. Always seems rather slow service.

Avoid Kingfisher in Sussex Road - complete rip-off and chips were cold.

America Lane - dodgy area. Acceptable but you're more likely to be mugged down there, or BATTERED.

View attachment 160795I see your £9-50 - cheap as chips. In queen of suburbia land its over £15.

Ordered over the phone without checking the price, couldn't believe the cost when picking it up.

Haven't been back
I'm betting they don't shift too many Dover Soles at that price, and, if an order actually appears I dread to think what it must smell like when its dug out from the back of the fridge.

Uckfield has a few chippies and all seem cheap. Not a fish eater but large battered sausage and chips £4.50 and always more chips than I can eat.
Up until last year weekends would be family night in with a Chinese or Indian takeaway. But the prices went over £40 to £50 for three of us so called it a day and now F&C on football nights.

We shared a large Haddock and large chips last night from the chippy opposite West Worthing station, the Haddock was a bit small for " large " but masses of chips for £9.50. We don't bother with the miserly portions of Mushy peas they give you, we just open a can from the cupboard..

In a similar vein, Morrisons were recently offering a four pack of large Heinze Baked Beans as a "Special " for £3.99 ! a pound a can for baked beans !
House mushy peas!!! Oh no that’s a lot worse than house rice what a way to carry on!!!

Lancing
For my Friday fish lunch I went to a place in Lancing.

Small chips.
Small cod.
Mushy peas.

£9.50

Generous portions, I’ll give them that but that’s pricey, eh? I’m sure it’s the same across the South but in York recently I enjoyed some of the best fish n chips I’ve ever had for £4

What do you pay for your fish supper? Or indeed any takeaway food?
I brought Harry Ramsdens frozen fish chips and mushy peas from Iceland huge portions really good quality £9 for two portion.

out of interest which fish and chip shop did you use in lancing, theirs a tiny one bottom end of South Street on the corner of Almer Street he does pensioners fish and chips lunch times for £5.50 and they are lovely

Shoreham
We went to Shoreham on Monday and snaffled fish and chips by the beach.
Myself, Mrs DFP, and DFP Jr shared 2x medium cod, 1 large chips, 1 x kids fish and chips, 1x mushy peas and 1 can of Rio. The bill was £25.80 which I thought was pretty steep.
It was very nice though.

That’s Mr Chips.

I’d rank the Lancing hippies (sic) in this order:

1. Taylor’s
2. Penhill
3. Mr Chips
4. Salt & Vinegar/Codfather or whatever it’s called right now.

Always share a large chips, as it’s cheaper.
But don’t get much change for scampi, cod, large chips and mushy peas from Bankers. Nice though, as a treat.

Monty's of Leek (website available) regular chips 2.20, small fish 4.00,peas 1.20 and again at 1-20. So for two £17-40 it makes you think twice.
I'm not surprised:

2 x £2.20 = £4.40
2 x £4.00 = £8.00
2 x £1.20 = £2.40

Total = £14.80

Yep, all caused by. Fish & Chip shops been especially hit hard, entire sector. Main distributor also dropped such independent accounts. The pain and misery behind the front of house has been terrible. Beyond general publics knowledge. Worth remembering when we all complain about price. Soon you won’t be paying anything. Because won’t be anywhere to buy from!
It's also that years ago (When I were a lad) Fish and Chips was one of a handful of takeaway options, now everything has changed and you can even get a delivery from One Stop!! Pizzas, Chinese, Indian, Kebabs, Burgers, KFC etc. the market is saturated.
