By merely being where he was he was interfering with play; the keeper didn't commit until the ball was past Rooney. Regardless of how people feel about the rule, Martin Keown's incorrect insistence that it could only be offside if he'd touch it is piss poor for a commentator.

Keown quoted it as per the rule is written. Agreed he was in the line of sight of the keeper but the rule does not take that into account. It is about playing or attempting to play the ball which Rooney didnt.

The Preston keeper didn't touch Rooney, but its a stonewall penalty per the commentary team. The world has gone mad FFS.

Watch the keeper. As the shot comes in, he sets himself for Rooney to attack the ball, and only dives once it's past him. Of course he's interfering with play by being there. If that shot comes in without Rooney there, the keeper dives straight away and quite possibly saves it.

Oh for a commentator that tells the truth rather than parrot the party line. If its a crap decision then say so. Apparently Rooney is now the equivalent of a 747 on final approach at Heathrow..."if you impede his approach, it must be a penalty". Absolute rowlocks.
The rule absolutely takes that into account.

He wasnt interfering with an opponent, he was just standing there and then he gets slated for what was a stonewall certain penalty.
This is simply not true. The FIFA rulebook makes specific mention of obstructing the goalkeepers line of vision, as well as making a movement which deceives or distracts an opponent - actually touching the ball is not required.
